What guitar do you love the looks of but hate the tone?

Re: What guitar do you love the looks of but hate the tone?

I hate the tone of Fender Jaguars and Jazzmasters...but I'm not that crazy about thier looks either! :) :) :)

Re: What guitar do you love the looks of but hate the tone?

I have to agree with DSS. I love the look of the RR's and King V's but their tone is just not happening.

Re: What guitar do you love the looks of but hate the tone?

Firebirds- I really want to like them, bright and ice-picky, and the ergonomics of it would take some serious getting used to.

PRS- Just sound so sterile, and the necks are never comfortable to me.

Jazzmaster and Jaguar- I think they're nifty looking guitars, have owned one of each, the extra tone circuit is useless to me, the Jag has a really unique sound that doesn't take well to getting beefed up, Jazzmaster is just too... it lacks "immediacy." Take that to mean whatever... Both have the worst vibrato system- If I would have known about the BuzzStop when I had them, maybe I wouldn't have mentioned them.

Paul Reed Smith. Gorgeous. Built as good as it gets. Play very nice. Hate the tone for the most part. I've had 4 though..don't want any more at this point in time.

+1. I just don't like the way they sound. Very very bland and lifeless to my ears.

Re: What guitar do you love the looks of but hate the tone?

Pretty much all the Gibson's, except the V, the V is great instrument.

The SG looks killer, feels alright except for the neck heaviness, but sounds like !%@$. (sorry Gibson/SG fans, just mo) The Explorer looks killer but sounds too flat. The Paul sounds great (at least others have been able to geat great tone w/ Pauls) but is more than a hand full to play, for me.

edit - Actually, the CS 336 is most likely an EXTREMELY good sounding/playing guitar, and it looks alright, too.

While I generally hate the looks of guitars which I hate the tone....

I do like the Tele (way it plays and looks) but hate the tone.

Re: What guitar do you love the looks of but hate the tone?

Every now and again I'll buy an 80s shredder for old-time's sake and regret it pretty much immediately. It's weird, like when a woman who keeps going back to a man who abuses her...

+1 for the Les Paul opinion. Awesome tone but very unconfortable to me, in part because I have big fat fingers so the short scale doesn't work for me.

Also, I like how soapbars look but the tone's just not for me.

Re: What guitar do you love the looks of but hate the tone?

SG's look really cool, but i just cant get over how thier bodies feel so thin and it just feels off balance when i play them. They sound great though, just hard to play. Gotta love the devil horns though. Maybe that will change one day and i'll love SG'sbut until then, thats how it is.

Re: What guitar do you love the looks of but hate the tone?

les paul for sure. I want that tone sooooo bad but im too used to fighting my strat.

plus whats up with three tuners per side? I can restring my strat in playing position in about 5 mins. I really think that is one of the most overlooked design features of Leo's great guitar.

A very well made and beautiful guitar. But I agree there is something missing in them. I have played a few and never really liked the way they sound.

Gibson SG - sound is way too thin for my tastes... but looks hella sexy.. SG standard natural finish? :firedevil
...

+1... I love the look, but get turned off by every SG I play... :(

Wow, ya know, I found the exact opposite to be true. I've never strapped on a V and had it neck dive on me...they've always balanced perfectly, with the neck at an upward angle.

strange...

Not really strrange, depends very much on where the strap buttons are, esp the back one. If the nack one is on teh tipo of the wing nosediving is almost certaing, under the wing at about 50% distance that problem is MUCH reduced ;)

Teles: don't dig the way they look or sound...

Flying V's: can't stand the look...

Semi hollows: I dig they way they sound, but they all look so funny;

Ovations: can't stand the way they sound, and I just can't get used to the way the bowl looks...

Grand auditorium acoustics: I dig they way they sound, but they look funny to me... like a dreadnaught for a fat guy...

Re: What guitar do you love the looks of but hate the tone?

I forgot the Ric 4001. I've been a McCartney fan forever, when I was in High School I really got into Yes, and loved Motorhead. I got myself an early 70s Mapleglow Ric 4001. I never ever got that thing to sound like I imagined it would sound. It also was a bear because of the body binding- it tore into my wrist/forearm. But damn, if they ain't some sporty lookin' basses...

Re: What guitar do you love the looks of but hate the tone?

Explorer, I love how those guitars look but getting great tone from both the bridge and neck really frustrated me. The sit poorly on me as well. I made the switch to a V for my weird guitar fix and found it much easier to dial in.

Re: What guitar do you love the looks of but hate the tone?

Fender Stratocasters. I've never been able to get a good sound out of a Strat - too thin and shrill. Tele's, no problem, but I've never got on with a Strat.

Of course, plenty of folks do get a good sound out of 'em.
