what guitar PICK do you use? Dunlop? Tortex? Ultex? JazzIII? or ???

For electric, Jazz III – red or black, prefer the latter though, bit less slippery.

For acoustic...

Where do you guys GET all this stuff?? I mean yeah okay, you can order anything online, but you need to know what to ask for first...did you order 1-2 of each from a mailorder place's catalogue some years back and find what fit your tastes like that? Trust word of mouth? Or simply have "sticky" enough fingers to regularly end up going home with "new" picks and gradually explore whats on offer out there that way??

I mean I have like 6 or 7 types laying around, of which only what MIGHT be a tortex medium (orange, thin-ish but durable, print worn off) and a clear red "Jim Dunlop USA H" heavy are at all useful/useable and have actual staying power. The rest are crap whose service life ranges from "on par with a cigarette" to "not as glaringly bad, but still go through them like they were condoms or smthn".... Useless & almost useless, in other words.

...well, with honourable mention to Fender medium for neck adjustment needs ONLY (eyeballing action height & tried as a possible shim). And maybe I need to go check my eyesight or look for an out of sight display case with em, but I dont recall seeing our local GCs offerring all that many option past what I've already got

I like the Star Picks

http://www.everlystrings.com/star_picks.asp

.73 yellow recently although i also use .88 green a lot too.

Cool idea...bit the hole placement seems kinda off on the sample photo. Is that for simply pinching it between two fingertips or smthn? Get the feeling that, until its worn down to nothing, a proper grip wouldnt even make contact with that star

Guitar Center used to have a fishbox of picks and you could try each for $.35 each instead of buying a pack. they dont no mo'! but maybe a ma and pa store has that so you can try like a million

I use a wide assortment of picks. My latest purchase was Cactus picks.

My pick collection is actually monstrous that pic I posted is only a small sample of them in reality. I've been playing guitar for 19 years now and over that time I've bought tons of picks to try out (usually the 6 packs) so it's years of collecting. I keep a container in my guitar room that has one of every type of pick I have and now and again I'll go through it and play all of them just for kicks...always stick with the red Jazz III and red Max Grip Jazz III in the end though.

I just noticed Dunlop now offers assorted packs of their picks like this...

That could be a good way to test different ones.

I wish they'd make a gator grip Jazz III, that would be something I'd like to try.

Have been using the black Jazz III for years. Started using the Ultex ones and like that material a lot so far and have found I like the sharps a lot. Have had a problem finding a place around here to get these. I would love to try the Petrucci and the Hetfield Black Fang ones, but haven't found them around here.

I got those assortments from Dunlop. I think you kind of hone in on a shape and size, a material and a thickness, eventually you end up with a favorite or two.

What I found with all my pick testing was odd I guess. The picks I like best are the red Jazz IIIs as I mentioned but the other one...the 2.0mm gator grip. Yeah that HUGE pick in comparison to the Jazz III also sort of works for me. Granted not good enough to be my favorite but I can comfortably play with it where I can't comfortably play with a .88mm green regular Tortex which was the pick I used for well over a decade until I tried the Jazz IIIs. Thin picks drive me nuts with the flappy sound they make. V-Picks and Gravity picks look nice but that squeaking chirp sound they make is something I can't get past. Harder materials don't work for me since they make a bit of a clicking sound on the strings. So it's all about finding the Goldielocks "just right" pick.

I just tried the new D'Addario blue version of the Jazz III and it's pretty cool. It's in between the Jazz III and Jazz III XL in size and the material is in between the red and black Jazz III in terms of its hardness. Another one I could comfortably play with but I don't like the harsher tone of the harder material just as I don't like the black and carbon fiber Jazz III over the red.

The more picks you try the more picky you end up I guess.

Re: what guitar PICK do you use? Dunlop? Tortex? Ultex? JazzIII? or ???

I am interested in feel and ability to use as well as tone, but here is a video that shows tonal differences (small, but listen to the thin sound the vpick gives on chords):

ok maybe it is not super noticable...I do notice that I do not like vpick type tone though ... that squeaking chirp sound they make ;)

Brother gave me a black jazz III to try and I took to it instantly. Today I went to buy some and I wanted to try a ultex version but could only find the nylon and tortex. I went with the tortex but I think it is too warm sounding. I'm used to ultex big tri tip picks.
