What guitar should I get??

I allready got a really nice strat as my main axe for recording and gigging.But I need a nice second tone of equal quality.I'm thinking I need something with a Humbucker in it for gibson type tones.
I was considering the Gibson SG faded but after playing one I was uninspired by the large neck and rough finish.
I've been looking at BC Rich Mockingbird ST online,as it is neck through w/ a varitone and some tap switchs and I remeber liking the 80s USA mockingbirds.
I'm looking for suggestions for a good Gibson tone style guitar in the $700 or less range.
I'm not much for the superstrat type guitars.Looking for a HH gibson style.
I am a southern rock style player w/ a hard rock side too.
Any suggestions are cool as they spark ideas.

I have/had both an EC400 and a EC1000, I sold the EC1000 in favor of the EC400. The EC400 has the weight of an LP, the Tone of an LP, the Look, the feel, for a fraction of the cost.

Cool I'll take a look. Are they mahogany like a lp? What did you pay for yours if ya don't mind?

I was in a similar boat as you a few years ago. I had mostly Strat-like guitars and wanted something with a Gibson flavor for around $500. My choice was a Dean '79 V. Set neck, mahogany, 2 humbuckers, and all the Gibby goodness without the price tag. A great complement to my Fender type guitars and gives me tones and a vibe that I can't get with bolt-on's.

When it comes to humbucker tones on a budget, I always recommend an Epi Les Paul, SG, or Sheraton. Great guitars for the money. And, a worthwhile investment if you plan to add upgrades.

+1. Upgrade PU's and you're all set. I've done that many times to Epi's. They look & sound great.

+1 on the Epiphone. If you're going to buy a Les Paul ripoff, might as well start with Gibson's own ripoff. I've got a couple of Epiphones that, post-upgrades, slaughter everything else I've tried short of USA Gibson price range.

Gamera,I'd love a vintage Dean those were cool guitars.But since Dime Bag those deans are getting up there in price.
Epiphone is an Idea I spose they would be the ones to know how to make a Gibson knockoff :approve:

Save up an extra $500 or so and buy into a used Gibson Les Paul Classic. I see them all the time in the $1200 range and I have yet to find a "knock-off" that will even come close.

Yeah, if that's within your reach financially, I'd sign off on that. A Gibson Les Paul Classic will sh*t all over the Epiphones that I like so much. It's the real deal that all the wannabes, wannabe.

LP Studio, or something along the lines of Edwards/Tokai.

The Japanese craft some serious gats for the most part.

Depending on year and condition. I've sold a few 90's models I would rate out in 7 to 8 condition for $500. I sold an 08 model Fireburst with EMG 81/85 that was like brand new for $650.

I wouldn't say all Gibsons sh!t on Epis. I've played a few that were dogs. But I will say that I see more good ones than bad ones. It's just a matter of playing a few and finding a good one.

I've played some Epis that were bad ass, but would never sound like a Gibson because they were built completely different from different woods. I'm not talking about the $1000 and up Epi Elites, I'm talking about the run of the mill GC/MF Standards and Customs. They used tons of different woods for the bodies and tops and when they did a Maple top, it was a thin peice of veneer. I think alot of the solid color Standards used an Alder top and sometimes an alder body.

It's not they aren't great guitars, it's just they are different guitars. The only way to get that "LP" tone is with mahogany and maple.

Found this out the hard way. I LOVE my epiphone, it plays and feels great, and sounds pretty bad-ass with 2 '59s, but at the same time it does NOT have the same clarity, bite, and depth as Gibsons I played. The difference between "mahogany-like wood" and "mahogany with a 1/2" thick maple top" is a big difference. But as the player, you'll feel the difference a lot more than any audience will.
