What happened to the Duncan Performer line?

Re: What happened to the Duncan Performer line?

That is a shame, but bonafide Invaders show up in the Trading Post from time to time. With a little patience, you can score the real deal for not much more moola.

The Detonator was not an Invader clone, despite the looks. I've actually been told it was closer to the Distortion, but with big 1/4" allen bolts.

That's interesting. I read somewhere the Invader was just a Distortion with Allen bolts.

Re: What happened to the Duncan Performer line?

I'm curious about these too- were the Performer series similar to the pickups now called Duncan Designed, or were they the same, or something completely different?

It's not. The Invader might have started off with the Distortion coils, but the Invader (I believe it was originally called the Darth Vader) has a big ceramic magnet and then two smaller ones on either side of the polepieces underneath the coil.

They both existed at one point, building the same pickups. I believe the Duncan Designed name was applied to all OEM pickups, and the Performers were all after market pickups.

Don't quote me on that though.

Re: What happened to the Duncan Performer line?

Thanks for pointing this one out. I had spotted it yesterday, but couldn't believe how they absolutely disappeared from places like MF and GC. I'm pretty sure it was the only Duncan Performer that had been available for the last few years anyways.

Re: What happened to the Duncan Performer line?

Wasn't the Scorcher and Performer simply Duncan Designed pups branded exclusively for MF?

Re: What happened to the Duncan Performer line?

My understanding is that they simply re-branded Duncan Designed as Duncan Performer to sell individually, instead of OEM on different guitars.

Yeah. The Duncan Designed pickups were the OEM parts and the Performers were available as aftermarket pickups for 16 year old kids who couldn't afford an entire set of pickups for their Squier but still wanted to change the sound.

Re: What happened to the Duncan Performer line?

- Performers are the same as the "Duncan Designed" line, but packaged for retail sale direct to customers

- The imported "Detonator" combines the Duncan Designed "HB-103" wind with Invader style pole pieces. Both the Detonator and HB-103 use a standard-thickness ceramic magnet.

- The USA SH-6 Distortion uses an extra-thick Ceramic magnet at its core

- The USA SH-8 Invader is a very similar wind (identical?) to the SH-6 Distortion and also uses the extra-thick Ceramic magnet of the SH-6 Distortion, but it tops off the formula with those big oxide cap poles and also uses 2 additional, slimmer ceramic magnets in flanking positions on the outside of the pole pieces for even greater output.

The Invader has a similar wind, but uses a double ceramic magnet with two ceramic spacer magnets, instead of the single double thick ceramic like the Distortion.

Cool. Does this actually affect the sound, or is it just cosmetic? And if so, I could convert my HB-103 to a Detonator by simply changing the pole pieces?

It does change the sound (for the better, IMHO). Not entirely sure about swapping in the bolts, though. I'm not sure they'd actually fit.

Re: What happened to the Duncan Performer line?

And I'm not sure where to get those. I believe they need to be a certain material to be effective. In other words, I can't just go to Ace hardware and buy some bolts.

You cannot just convert the HB-103 to a detonator because you need to have two slut coils in order to compensate for the larger bolt shaft diameter.
