What happened with Alnico 6 & 7 ??

Hi, This is just out plain curiosity, I know of pickups using A2,3,4,5, 8, now there's A9 coming to the show.... but wait just one minute... I think 6 and 7 got lost somewhere in the mix.

Can anyone school me on this very particular subject?????

I'm still waiting for a definitive comparison chart between them all. I mean, just exactly how much difference is there between an A2 and A3? Surely there'd have to be enough to warrant the difference in rating, in which case you're absolutely right - where's the A6 and 7s?

And what of the A1?

The fact that other types of Alnico exist, it doesn't mean they're desirable for p'up making.

Having said that, A6's been used in Lipstick p'ups since the beginning, most probably because is very powerful but dark sounding, and what it's called A7 in reality is a the most powerful and harsh sounding of A5s, actually called A5-7.

HTH,

PS: I've found the chart, the GRADE is LNG60 aka AlNiCo 5-7.

Some late Seventies Gibsons featured an Alnico 7 bar magnet in their humbuckers. (Probably another reason why those guitars were not well received.) Harsh is the word.

There's actually Alnico 1 thru 12.

I got a few A6's from Zhang a couple years ago. They're similar to an A8, with a bit less treble.

It would be nice to see some A1's and A7's surface, so we could see what applications they have.

It arrives next week, I'm thinking all I need is a few hours, I can record clean/moderate distortion/heavy distortion. Mag swap, repeat. I'll start an official a9 thread when clips are done, unless someone beats me to it.

You should have order it fully charged, than it would be a fair comparison

Yep, wasn't sure what to do in that respect so I played it safe with an a8 charge. Maybe someone else will buy a fully charged, they are still up for sale.

But that's too hot for the kind of music I play, so there's no point in doing that. I'm interested in something useable.

Actually I was talking to Franknfilms... and it was for the sake of fair comparison only.

No, there really is an Alnico 7. I was talking to some Chinese mag maker a couple years back about getting some, but the minimum order was 200 lbs.!!!!! So obviously I never got to find out what they're like. Blueman is right about A6.

I have some A6 rods and they actually work very well in a Strat bridge pu. Made a couple of prototypes, a 14k (43) and an 8k (42). The 14k was kind of humbuckerish, the 8k a nice beefier/wider vintage flavor.

Note also that the number refers to the "creation" date. Not the magnet strength.
