What is a better tube rack preamp than a marshall jpm?

I think its a jpm anyway...the marshall one that most people with marshall preamps have. Just wondering what else is out there that would be able to do good clean as well as great crunch and high gain stuff. Im looking into this for a mate because he's got a rack setup and its going to go with a kittyhawk el34 poweramp...beautiful poweramp, been totally refurbished transformers and all!

Just what is there pretty much, lay it all on me about rack tube preamps

JMP-1 :D

I've owned the JMP-1, a Groove Tubes Trio, a SansAmp PSA-1, Digitech 2112, & a VHT GP-3.

All have their merits & downfalls, but hands down, the VHT was the winner for me. 3 completely different voices, all doing tremendous jobs with clean, dirty & scream !

Re: What is a better tube rack preamp than a marshall jpm?

VHT, Mesa, CAE, Soldano, Egnater, Randall......

Re: What is a better tube rack preamp than a marshall jpm?

although i never owned a jmp, the one i tried sounded pretty good =D

but i bought the engl 530 anyway, and im quite happy with it.

the ibanez jpm, however, i want ;o;

The Randall/Egnator modualar preamps are pretty smoke'n! The Mesa Triaxis was ok(side note, I'm not a big Mesa Fan). Modded JPM-1s sound friggin SWEET! and the ADA MP1 w/ the 3tube mod done on it.....Oh My. There's lots of good sounding tube preamps out there. You'll just have to play a few to hear what fits your ears the best!

I love mine (thanks to kaffiman) but it's not the best clean sound out there. I use the clean, but I also have other preamps that I use clean too. If it was my only preamp, I would find everything about it fantastic and usable except for that rich, fendery clean sound. If you take the clean gain up to the point where it's just about breaking up, then it's a lot better. I have 7 preamps right now, acquired slowly over 15 years, and I've had probably 10 others over time. The JMP 1 overall is one of the best, just know that the cleans are very Marshally. The OD is actually Marshall plus more, but the cleans are just Marshall.

My Digitech 2112 sounds absolutely beautiful... but you've gotta be prepared to tweak, then tweak some more.

The Randall ones look nice, since you have the different modules for different types of amplifiers like Blackface Twin, Marshall Plexi, a Brown Sound module, Bogner Ecstacy, Soldano, Mesa/Boogie, etc. It looks like it goes best with the 50 watt two side 6L6/EL34 Randall power amp though.

The Randall Modular ones by Egnator actually sound quite good through a nice poweramp, and the Randall poweramp has one channel of 6L6's and one of EL34's that can be midi controlled.

The VHT is what I'd go for, though.

:headbang: Hands down a Randall RM4 or a Engnater M4. One of the best sounding and versatile preamps I have ever used. Plus, Bruce is a hell of a good guy. I am looking into getting rid of my Mesa and going back to a Egnater M4 and VHT 2502 setup. I miss it.

Also a Bogner Fish is a good sounding preamp.

Plus, the Randall RT2/50 poweramp is real easy to bias yourself!
