What is a good subsitute for a Plexi?

Hey guys.. I'm wondering if anyone has a good dencently priced tube amp out that gets that killer Plexi sound? I'd thought about a modeling amp thru the PA but don't know which is the best, etc? I hate to have to buy a real plexi after looking at the prices on Ebay as I'm not even in a band, but I want that tone so bad! hehehe.. Any suggestions? I'm especially interested in it for recording.. and of course I would like to get in a band part time at least and I want to make sure I have all my T's crossed and I's dotted so to speak with my tone.. I'll be playing a Jackson and a home made Strat style guitar.. with a floyd..and I want to get that Brown sound, but with a little more balls.. if that makes sense.. I can hear it in my head at least..hehehehe.. There's a guy that has some killer Van Halen clips on the clips forum, and he had a clip that has a blues solo.. I kinda liked that tone, but even with a tad more balls.. But his tone was very close to what I like.. Sorry, I can't remember who it was..

correct me if i'm mistaken, but don't mig 50's get a decent plexi tone? those arent too pricy

To me, there is nothing better than a hotrodded plexi, but what price range are you looking at?

Sovtek Mig 50's are similar to Marshall model 1987 50 watt heads.

With some skillful mods and parts upgrades they can sound really good.

But transformers are the heart and soul of an amp and that's one big reason why Marshalls sound like Marshalls and Sovteks don't.

There´s a substitute for a Plexi?? Not that I´d buy one, but it would be the first one I´ve heard of ;)

I used to get some excellent plexi tones out of a Univalve with a single Mullard EL34, at 12AX7 in the input tube and a 12AT7 in the drive tube. The Uni is a little spongier than a true plexi but had tone like you wouldn't believe, many people say they don't have enough gigging power, they can be had on ebay for around five bills.

Laney makes an amp that is regarded as a decent plexi alternative. I will get the model number...

Yes...with some mods those can made into excellant amps. Hammond Transformers are used in them and they are excellant transformers. But they don't sound like a Marshall...they only have similarities. Still...if a guy is looking for a cheaper alternative, the Traynor or even the Sovtek are pretty good. I mean: a Toyota Corolla is a cheaper alternative to a Mercedes in alot of ways - it'll get you on the road. But it won't feel like you're driving a Mercedes.

There is one called the Laney Supergroup Plexi Head (100W), but I think they're pretty hard to come by since they're also pretty rare

I'm pretty sure they're a lot cheaper though, Black Sabbath used 'em too

They do have partridge parts though, so I think they've got good quality

Find yourself a late 67 to 69 50 watt silverface bassman. Not an exact plexi tone but can be had relatively cheap and arein the ballpark.

Sad to say and I know money is the issue,but if you want the Marshall tone,you pretty much need to buy a Marshall...

voodoo amps do a plexi mod for on that for around 3-400 and I believe they change everything including trannies to a clone of a plexi. the only trouble I see with these is that for the price of a used yba-1 plus plexi mods you are at about the price of a used marshall 1987x plexi, I bet the traynor has a better tranny and components though, the marshall would definately look cooler because the traynors pretty ugly but its about the sound right
I've been contemplating saving my money and sometime next year getting a avatar 2x12 with wheat grille and greenbacks and getting one of those traynors modded by voodoo and getting it retolexed(they are all from the 60's) and get a matching wheat grille. And keep my marshall dsl combo as a back up

Which brings the total price right up to that of a used Plexi = he may as well get the real thing straight off the bat ;)

BTW: I know your avatar is just supposed to be funny, but IMO it´s about the most distasteful thing I´ve ever seen save for maybe that Bill Gates/ Nazi Background photo-montage. I´m not even really a fan of Moore, but one of them is a mass murderer extraordinaire, human rights violator and war criminal, the other guy is merely an entertainer that isn´t afraid to say what he thinks. Not really a good parallel IMO.

But it´s your avatar, do what ya like, I´m the last person on this planet that would have you change it just because I don´t agree :friday:

I´m not offended, I just strongly disagree with the message and the way it´s communicated. I´m 100% sure others find it funny, just as I´ve done and said things that some others think suck and others laugh themselves silly about. Again, don´t change it because of me, that would be more likely to offend me :friday:
