What is a great neck pickup to use with a Dimarzio Super Distortion bridge P/U?

I have a nickel covered Dimarzio SuperDistortion bridge pickup in one of my Les Pauls. It, as many would agree, sounds super awesome.

The neck humbucker in this very nice Epiphone amber colored LP Plus Top is the stock Epi alnico classic and it is unremarkable. It does not compliment or combine with the SuperDistortion to result in an incredible sound. It does not sound incredible by itself.

I suppose we have many a player here that is very acquainted and experienced with the Dimarzio SuperDistortion bridge pickup. If you don't mind sharing, what have you found to be a great neck pickup to accompany this awesome SuperDistortion bridge pickup?

I suppose some of you "exclusively" have used the bridge SuperDistortion, but I'm sure many have also made use of a great neck pickup along with the SuperD to great affect and for a diversity of sound.

Your experience is appreciated more than you may know, and your feedback is priceless. I'm looking forward to hearing from some of you. Thanks in advance for flashing back on your SuperDistortion days.

I think the Duncan Pearly Gates neck goes great with just about any bridge humbucker.

PAF Pro, PAF 36th Anniv., Super 2, Air Norton, or hell, even another super distortion.

I don't like mixing brands in the same guitar. Done it a few times and never got along with the vibe that it brings.

I do it all the time. I mix Fralins with Duncans in three guitars.

Paf 36th anniversary neck goes great with a Super Distortion bridge. I have this setup in a alder superstrat and it's a great combination.

Nobody's mentioned the Air Classic yet? Ah well, I have that paired with a SD in a V. I found it to balance well with the SD bridge. Warm, cleans up well and is articulate enough for fast runs.
I too can't mix brands in the same guitar for some reason.

I checked out a bunch of these on MF today and they have some nice ones. You can order them thru your local professional music supply house that deals with Dimarzio and you can get them with chrome or nickel covers. I got my SuperDistortion with a full chrome cover. If I get a Tone Zone or something like that I will order it with the full chrome cover.

Remember this is going into a nice LP. I want to have matched chrome covered pickups. Possibly the covered 36th anniv. would be a good compliment to the SuperDistortion and give some old school sounds. I want to get this ordered and done soon.

I might even pull the SuperDistortion out of my Epi LP Plus top and put it, along with the new neck pickup, into my even nicer Agile AL-3125 amber burst flame chambered LP copy with the upgraded electronics and wiring. Then put the very decent Agile pickups in the Epi plus top. This way I would have better parts, an ebony fretboard, and nicer tuners, plus the chambered body and Graphtec string saddles. It makes sense to me and the amber burst is really beautiful. I think they call it Honey Sunburst Flame. Nice feeling mahogany neck too.

I have an Air Norton with my Super D. It's sweet.

The 36th Anniv is also really nice.

Honestly it just depends on what sound you want. I agree the Super D is an amazing pickup

I personally have a regular old Dimarzio PAF (But go 36th if you want). Sounds great!

I also agree - another SuperD makes a certain statement!

Or, a PG would be an awesome choice if you don't mind mixing brands. I've never done that.

Lots of folks like Duncan's Screamin' Demon in the neck. I'd put a Dimarzio 36th in it.

DP151 Paf Pro, Dave Murray, classic Iron Maiden, 'nuff said.

PAF pro, or Duncan PG or 59b model

The Norton! I have tried both the air norton and the Norton in the neck position. The air norton if you want something with classic cleans, but if you are looking for a really great hot lead pickup, the Norton in the neck. I think that will match the character / output of the Super Distortion best.

Re: What is a great neck pickup to use with a Dimarzio Super Distortion bridge P/U?

For me, I only have one guitar with a Super Distortion, because it's a classic sound that I want to have in my arsenal. But I have a lot of guitars and it's not a "desert island" pickup for me.

I always combine it with the Super 2 in the neck, but again it's because that's a certain sound. The middle position (especially coil split to inside coils) is really crisp and funky. If that's not the sound you're after, and its your only (or one of few) guitars, you may be happier with something PAF-ish with Alnico magnet. All the recommendations in that range thus far are fine, PAF/36th, Pearly Gates, Air Classic, etc. just personal preference.
