What is a Twang Banger really?

Like some other SD models ,is the Twang Banger one of their other production single coils with the copper plate added. We all know what a huge difference changing magnets can do , so I'm just wondering if its the same type of thing with the Twang Banger.

The twangbanger is closest to an Alnico 2 Pro staggered, but it is wound hotter that the A2P, and it has the base plate.

It's also wound with plain emamel, which is the same wire Leo used on the first Broadcaster pickups.

Evan,

What kind of wire is used on an typical Duncan Single coil, and how does the plain enamel wire change the tone of the TB?

Re: What is a Twang Banger really?

A vintage Fender-style Strat pickup, for example, uses Heavy Formvar wire. The exceptions are the Broadcasters and Single Coil P-Bass which use Plain Enamel.

The Plain Enamel on the Twang Banger makes it sound more like the old Broadcaster pickups and less like a typical Strat pickup.

Re: What is a Twang Banger really?

Interesting! I've installed bassplates on 8K Strat pickups with alnico 5 polepieces and probably wound withFormvar copper wire. They sure don't sound as fat, punchy and midrangey as the alnico 2 Twangbanger. So part of the diff is the Plain Enamel on the Twangbanger? The alnico 2 poles of the Twangbanger make a big diff too: more mids and a smoother treble.

But I've also compared the 9.5K alnico 2 Antiquity Texas Hot Custom to the 8.2K alncio 2 Twangbanger and Twangbanger seemed louder and fuller in tone. Part of that would be the bassplate on the TB but the Plain Enamel must be the other part of the diff.

Interesting!

Twang Banger is my southern hick cousin. We once traded places with each other, and he learned about the fast paced life in the city, while I learned about the down home goodness in the country.

A lesson was learned by all.

im putting a base plate on a surfer custom bridge tonight, cant wait to see how it sounds. the surfer doesnt have quite enough fullness in the mids for the guitar its in.

That's why I prefer the alnico 2 Antiquity Texas Hot Custom Bridge or Twangbanger: alot more mids. But I prefer the Surfers for the neck and middle positions. Lew

Re: What is a Twang Banger really?

I can't believe how much info and knowledge I'm picking up here in such a short space of time. Roll on UGD UK!!!

Re: What is a Twang Banger really?

So I guess the APS' use the heavy formvar too........cool info thanks alot Evan!

Plain enamel wire? is this a copper alloy? Please excuse my ignorance, I've never heard of enamel wire. Please educate me.

Q. Is this copper wire with an enamel insulator?

A. I answered it with a quick visit to Seymour's Q&A.

Enamel insulator.

Why would the insulator make such a difference in a pickups tone?

Re: What is a Twang Banger really?

It's a point of debate but most of the pickup winders I've talked to say the material used for the insulation (enamel vs. poly) makes zero difference -- it's the THICKNESS of the insulation that matters and affects the capacitance of the coil.

If enamel sounds different, it may be because it naturally goes on thicker or thinner than the poly, but not because it is a different substance.

At least that's what these guys tell me...

Would the added capacitance roll off the highs like it does in cables? This would be an apparent increase in mids, but not an actual increase, right?
