Lewguitar said:Interesting! I've installed bassplates on 8K Strat pickups with alnico 5 polepieces and probably wound withFormvar copper wire. They sure don't sound as fat, punchy and midrangey as the alnico 2 Twangbanger. So part of the diff is the Plain Enamel on the Twangbanger? The alnico 2 poles of the Twangbanger make a big diff too: more mids and a smoother treble.
But I've also compared the 9.5K alnico 2 Antiquity Texas Hot Custom to the 8.2K alncio 2 Twangbanger and Twangbanger seemed louder and fuller in tone. Part of that would be the bassplate on the TB but the Plain Enamel must be the other part of the diff.
Interesting!

Would the added capacitance roll off the highs like it does in cables? This would be an apparent increase in mids, but not an actual increase, right?Zhangliqun said:It's a point of debate but most of the pickup winders I've talked to say the material used for the insulation (enamel vs. poly) makes zero difference -- it's the THICKNESS of the insulation that matters and affects the capacitance of the coil.
If enamel sounds different, it may be because it naturally goes on thicker or thinner than the poly, but not because it is a different substance.
At least that's what these guys tell me...
