What is going on with the new Les Paul Studio pricing?

Re: What is going on with the new Les Paul Studio pricing?

So wait, the Gibson plant in Memphis has a high turnover rate? As in, they can't keep people, or is it in reference to the production volume?

I'm maybe 80 miles North of Memphis, not too tough of a commute, and might be interested in working there, if they pay anything.

Sure they go for that much - it's because of the premium materials they use. Just the cap for the pickup selector switch can cost a couple hundred dollars, apparently.

I played several studios prior to buying an ibanez arz800. I think i saved 500 euros, and i got a better guitar.

It amazes me that guitar companies sell new guitars at all. We have 40+ years of the SAME FREAKING instrument (give or take a robotic tuner) being produced over and over... I mean the electric guitar today is essentially the same as in 1970 and there are so many used guitars available... why someone would pay $1700 for a new Fender Stratocaster or $2500 for a new LP Standard is beyond me...

Just saw in the new GC flyer that R7 and R8's are now $4,500. Wow. I'm a big Gibson nut and never used to complain about the prices too much, but I'm kinda shocked with these new prices I'm seeing. The new SG standard on the other hand looks to be priced just about right basically being a 61RI but now $600 less than they were before. Gibson is hard to figure out.

For about $4,500 you could probably get a custom guitar made to your own exact specs.

Yep. They have gone up a lot over the past 10 - 12 years. So have Standards, and most Gibsons, really. Meanwhile, Gibson have also gotten sloppier and sloppier, and started using cheaper and cheaper wood. If you wanna get a Gibson, be smart and buy a used one from 10+ years ago.

When I got my new '04 Standard, I bought it along with a new Les Paul Melody Maker for $1,980. Nowadays just a Standard will cost you over $2,500. The MM was literally Gibson's cheapest guitar in the line. However, it held its own quite well against the Standard. Even the cheesy guitars at that time were very good instruments, and the expensive ones could at least somewhat support their high prices by way of their quality and brand prestige. And that was after they had already started going downhill.

I also remember the first Les Paul that I ever fell in love with. It was a late '80's or early '90's wine red Standard, and it cost a whopping $1,250 when I was drooling over it in my local shop as a teenager. Now, 20 years later, you can get a worse made guitar if you are willing to spend twice as much. Such a value!

so just so everyones clear....the tech specs are NOT the same as the 2012 models. Worth the price jump? nope, but they have LPJ's and such now to fill that lower price gap. New studios have coil taps and some have a gloss top/ satin neck and back.

Re: What is going on with the new Les Paul Studio pricing?

Aren't the new LPJ models basically the replacements for the faded studio models that were selling for $800.00 ?

Re: What is going on with the new Les Paul Studio pricing?

So did anyone buy one yet so they can enlighten us why they are so much more valuable?

Ten years ago, Gibson was offering a Gary Moore sig. (not the bfg version) for $1300.00 new. How times have changed.
