what is good ground wire ?

Re: what is good ground wire ?

Any place that handles electrical supplies should have what you need. Cloth covered is very hard to find where I live. For that I buy on E Bay.

AWG 22 is what you need. Electrical convention says green or black, but any color will work. Some people use uncovered but I prefer covered.

the Ethernet cable connected to your pc has 8 conductors of AWG 22
slab off some

thanks! I went to Radio shack and the dude tried to sell me some wire that I could use in a house.. Im like, No TOOO thick..

Re: what is good ground wire ?

Covered or uncovered absolutely doesn't matter, since all interference that might be picked up will bleed directly to ground and out of the signal path.

Re: what is good ground wire ?

Stranded 22 gauge copper or aluminum wire is all you ever need to do guitar wiring. You don't need a special kind of wire for ground connections.

Solid is VERY hard to work with, plus research has shown that stranded wire is better at carrying an audio signal.

that is correct but I think it might be better to have it covered so it doesn't accidentally short the circuit

Re: what is good ground wire ?

I use the standard pre-bonded wire that they sell for pedals, which is 24AWG, and that works great too. I use that for all my non-vintage guitar wiring needs, as well as ground wires. Never had a problem with it, ever.

If there's another exposed signal point between where the ground wire starts and where it ends, that's a whole other problem. To each his own, though. In practice, it should make exactly no difference, except when installing. You have to strip a covered wire, and you don't have to strip a bare wire.

Re: what is good ground wire ?

my choice of late is some old speaker wire
I been slabbing off an old stereo thats lying under my table
hope the guy that dropped it off 10 years ago forgets about it

thanks! Yeah, I had a solid wire I was trying to use once and I couldnt get it to bond...

Guess I can use the same wire for grounding and extending a lead on a pup?

Thanks everyone!

Re: what is good ground wire ?

Never use aluminim wire. You cant solder to it.
If you want to use solid wire youll need a higher wattage iron. Solid use usually used for busses.
Stranded wire is better for signal because the current actually runs on the outside edge of each strand.

Please ignore this post. It's composed of 4 parts misinformation, 1 to 2 parts ignorance, and at least 1 part I-want-to-sound-smart-on-the-internet.

Re: what is good ground wire ?

Where did you get this from?

I have made THOUSANDS of rock solid solder joints with aluminum wire.

Ratherdashing is correct, you can solder aluminum.

There are acid and rosin pastes that can be used to solder aluminum.

Aluminum oxide is what you can not solder to, but the paste chemically removes that oxide coating.

Having acknowledged his post - I still use copper for my wiring projects!
