What is it about Gibson...

Re: What is it about Gibson...

I guess I'm just lucky. I have 9 Gibsons (2 Les Paul Classic Premium Plus's, 3 Les Paul Classic Plus's, 2 SG Juniors, an Explorer, and an ES-135 LE) and they all play great, the frets are perfect, and there's no finish flaws. Like I say, I reckon I'm just lucky.

The night I met my wife waaaay back in the mid to late 80's, I went to this bar on a Sunday night (something I'd never have done if they hadn't closed down the school I was teaching at because of the Pope's visit to San Antonio), but I was went into this bar cuz my favorite bar was closed and they had some bimbo named Debbie Gibson singing. I almost balked at the cover but there were a lot of hot chicks in there. My wife was there as a big Debbie Gibson fan.

It was karma. I love Debbie Gibson cuz she helped me meet my Debi. :)

Miss Gibson did a tasty little layout for Heff not too long ago as well. Oh so nice.

They sell the best ones, the picks of the litter, to the guys in the Nashville area. Hometown discount I guess.

Besides, now you are a Gretsch guy! How does that Japanese Gretsch compare in quality to your Gibsons?

Re: What is it about Gibson...

I'll probably never own a Gibson again.
Reasons:
1: I just don't like the feel of their nitro finishes.
2:Quality to price ratio. I don't feel you get your monies worth.
3: I think there are better made and more reasonably price alternatives out there. MIJ replicas for one. Least that work for me. Others my feel differently.
4:I don't need Gibson on the headstock to feel important or cool.
5:I don't buy into prestige. A guitar is good or it's bad. No matter the builder.
6: When it comes down to it. I actually prefer 24 fret neck thru shred guitars. :D

Well like I say, all my Gibsons are pretty close to perfect, but the Gretsch IS perfect.;)

A-freakin-men. The notion that 50 year old designs are the best there is...

Re: What is it about Gibson...

You can have all of the "made in the far east", diped in plastic guitars you want....that's cool. I'll take "made in the USA", nitro finishes...that's cool too.

No one is twisting your arm to buy a Gibson....so why slam them. Some of us prefer them, and we don't prefer 24 fret super strats. We don't start threads slamming them.

Everyone try's to knock the biggest guy off the top of the hill.

Seafoamer......are you trying to tell me that you actually LIKE the 70's stuff?:yell: Myonly experience with Gibsons was my first electric, which was a snadwich bodied 75........absolute piece of DUNG!!!!!!!!!! Then I got an early R7......heaven on earth......had to sell it after my divorce. Just got a2005 R9......same as the R7. Maybe i am gettin a different view because i am buying a Historic, but those 70's LP's were atrocious.

Re: What is it about Gibson...

him say pre 84......ug...lol everybody prefers the 50's stuff, but what regular joe player has $150-250,000+ burning a hole in their pocket for a guitar purchase?

Re: What is it about Gibson...

I have a friend who had a really nice 70's gold top w/ those minibuckers. I'd take it over the new LP's i've played.

He has a '57(?) Gibby I believe, check his avatar.

Re: What is it about Gibson...

Wow...I guess I'm REALLY cool and important cos I've played Gibsons for about 20 years

If you like X better because of a multitude of valid reasons, thats cool...but comments like that are assinine...it has nothing to do with the name on the instrument but of the maturity level of the person playing it. I used to get that lamea$$ attitude from all the shred kids back in the 80s when I pulled down a Paula or Explorer or V and started playing. "dude, buy a jackson/ibanez/charvel/kramer", etc etc. It goes both ways.

As for 50 year old designs...name something else in this world besides a guitar that is 50 years old , and basically in the same exact form it was when introduced?

Seems to me that's a testament to how innovative and well designed it is.

Re: What is it about Gibson...

PRS vs. Gibson.... neither
Maybe its cause I can't afford an R8, and I'm jealous, But I think you can get guitars out there that are just as good aND lot cheaper then both those companies. If your actualy looking for the lp tone or feel then I understand your reason for buying such an instrument, and normaly thats the case, but if your looking for a good value instrument and in no way looking for a specific tone or feel then I think theres other instruments that would be better.

Oh and I am jealous of anyone with an R8:laugh2:

I see your point, but I never go guitar shopping thinking "I want to find the coolest axe I can get for X dollars". Usually I know what kind guitar I want, see if I can fit it in my budget and either get it or save until I can. I am ALWAYS looking for a specific tone or feel when looking at guitars, I don't usually shop just to shop, but I could be in the minority here.

Re: What is it about Gibson...

No Fretfire I know most people want a certain guitar and then save to buy or try to find it cheaper. I was just saying I want a Jazzy rock guitar and I know theres a lot of guitars out there that can do it, I do a little research on all the options and choose the best value, even if its not 100% to what I wanted I won't lose value because of it, I dont think many people do that. Right now im getting a signature lg but its everything I want, but doesn't have a rosewood neck, I'm not going to go out and buy another guitar that I want more if its not as good value, thats the point I'm making. I Base my decision on vale then what I want. So long as its similar I suppose. If you want the les paul tone and feel then I understand the reason for buying it, and I have to say they are awsome instruments.

Re: What is it about Gibson...

A car still has the same design as it did 50 years ago, minor tweaks but nothing big.
