What is it about the Les Paul...

Re: What is it about the Les Paul...

I like Strats and Teles very much too and have one of each, but I'm still a Gibson guy. My desert island guitar would be either a 3-pup Black Beauty or a flamey 335 or 355.

Dark and muddy, in the best way. Love 'em. Couldn't do without mine now. They are like the sledgehammer of the guitar world. Maybe not the most advanced, precision tool for the job, but they always get your point across.

Re: What is it about the Les Paul...

I think it's the mids. Les Pauls are the king. My personal favorites are SGs but I don't play them anymore. I swap between a Tele and my LP Custom. They're just the most perfect for anything. Want Jazz? No problem. Metal? C'mon, make it tough! Country? Hell, yes. Straightforward rock? Nothing does it better.

I love this analogy

Because Les knew what he was doing when he designed it:banana:

They sustain so well and they feel great, and look cool...that's why:6:

I like that analogy too. However, I think it was simply this: the Les Paul had hotter output than the Ibanez. I've never liked Ibanez pickups, and I've heard that sometimes when they do the HSS thing they put in 250k pots, which probably cut the output a tad bit. Also, if the body of the Ibanez is soft maple, that's another reason why it probably had less output. There are many factors.

Ibanez pickups are beyond horrible, that might be part of the reason why everyone said your guitar was clearer with the LP.

Yeah, I never liked Ibanez's own pickups that much. I prefer SD all the way.

Because Les Pauls are the most perfect guitar (I didn't say they are perfect, I said most perfect). They are heavy, but that's just because they are better. LPs can do any kind of music (Strats are close though, regrettably, but they're not as pretty).

Most perfect? I don't think it's really like that. The most perfect (sonically) instrument is the violin, in theory, but I'm not wanting to start that discussion, just gloss over it. Anyways, I find that my LP can do a lot of stuff, unless the other guy I'm copying is using a Strat or Tele, in which case I basically need their guitar to do it. Sure, my ESP LTD with Hot Rodded combo and push/pull splits can get close to the other guys, and it's the most versatile guitar I've ever owned, but it's not going to do it perfectly. Besides, the Strat itself is versatile due to the 5 switching combinations you normally get, but it's a Strat.

I find that my Lite Ash can cut through sometimes, but sometimes I have to cut the highs using the tone knob if I want a thick sound. It can, however, give a thick sound. Just not as thick and loud as my ESP (LP-wanna-be). The JB in my ESP can do metal, my Strat (3 x alnico ii pro staggered) can't really do it as well. Anything, for example, can play metal, with the right rig, but the ESP with JB bridge will sound much better playing it than my Strat. Strats do have nice clarity as well.

By the way, I think the perfect setup for a band is one playing a Strat or Tele, the other playing a LP.

Although I like Les Pauls alot...

I will much rather use a Strat for metal than trying to use a Les Paul for surf.

Strat is just a versatile guitar, sure a Les Paul is too but still its much easier getting a strat heavier than getting a Les Paul brighter (with stock pickups).

Well if you have your LP wired for splits, you might get surfy tone, but yeah, I'd rather use a Strat for metal than a LP for surf.

Yeah sure you can go in 600 different directions witth rewiring etc.

What I meant was when both are stock :)

Les Pauls are great guitars... They just need to be used for the right genre :)

Oh, well yeah, stock. Aside from LP's with dual P90's, I doubt you could even remotely do surf music with a HH guitar (without using some tone modification effects).

Re: What is it about the Les Paul...

For me it's simply a mater of what kind of music I'm playing at the time. I love my Gibby, I love my Fenders, and right now I really love my Schecter Corsair out of all of 'em. It's all relative.

Re: What is it about the Les Paul...

Les didn't design the Les paul guitar except for the tailpiece on the '52-'53 models and the gold color.

Ibanez is horrible? As opposed to the 490/498 combo everyone here beats up on? Like I said, Gibson's are decent pups for most anything. And this proves it!
