What is the best Jazz hollowbody guitar?

Re: What is the best Jazz hollowbody guitar?

I would go with a Gibson 345 which comes with a 6 position tone selector like BB Kings retails at $2500.00 but if you look around they can be had for around $1500 also pick up a copy of Vintage giutar lots of jazz boxes listed vintage and new lol.

Good Luck

Who here has changed the pickups on their hollow-bodies? Don't you have to go in through the f-holes? God, that seems nearly impossible to work like that.

I played this one today at my local music store - it is of course the Ibanez George Benson GB100BS, the specification is GB neck; Flamed Maple top/back/sides;Small frets;Ebony bridge; GB special (H) neck pu; GB special (H) bridge pu.

It played beautfully and had a very nice tone to it although it is new. The guy who owns the shop is a jazz player and it was interesting hearing what he was doing with it. To say that I am tempted is putting it mildly and I have to think very hard on whether I should go for it or forget about it altogether.

Oh my goodness that is a lovely guitar.
That looks beautiful.
Thos little humbuckers are those floating?

The finish is gorgeous
The inlays are gorgeous
the headstock design is gorgeous
The golden tailpeace looks like a flower and is gorgeous

How much How much How much ?!?!!?

Re: What is the best Jazz hollowbody guitar?

i think a heritage might be your best bet, great guitars. they are the old gibson guys and use solid woods vs the laminate that is much more common even with expensive guitars

Re: What is the best Jazz hollowbody guitar?

wow i can't believe there wasn't any mention of one of guilds archtops. they make a few dual humbucker jazz boxes that are killer and already have duncans in them. They are a little harder to find since fender bought out guild but they are worth it. An X150D (lists at 2299.00) sounds like it would be just the right guitar for you. it has two humbuckers (the x150 only has one pickup) and plays well. try and find a used one, ebay usually has a few guilds on there and they go pretty cheap for the quality.

Re: What is the best Jazz hollowbody guitar?

The Guilds are very good archtops for the money---whether new or vintage. Just last year, I almost bought a 1960 single pu X175 for 1K. So, there are bargains to be had...

If you want a McKerrihan 16" handbuilt (a Benedetto style box, no f-holes), shoot me a PM...

+1. A 335/345/355 are sweet guitars for a lot of genres, including jazz. But that 6 position Vari-tone switch is just about worthless. One of Gibson's blunders that should have never have made it out of the 1950's.

Great guitars, no question, but not really a Jazz box. If you really want to play traditional Jazz you need a full hollow. I would either go with an acoustic with a floating pickup or a laminated top with the pickup cut into the top, like an L5 7 or 12.

WOW!! Do u guys realize this thread is from 2004???????

I was 21 back then LOL. I am 26 now!

Now I play electric fusion and shred music. Not quite traditional jazz. All I got is an Ibanez Artcore AK86 though, and its pretty cool. Someday, when I have more disposable income, I'll invest in a heritage, gretsch, gibson or maybe top of the line Ibanez, like a Joe Pass series.
