Hi, i have noticed that there are a few different versions of the Peavy Bandit 112 amplifier, from different years and stuff like that. i was wondering, which is the best?

There is no such thing as a 'best Peavey Bandit'.
The words best and Peavey Bandit are mutually exclusive.
(I suffered through the "Bandit Years" in the 80's. Total crap!!)

I was able to coax a good practice metal tone from a 1x12 Transtube combo, actually, using an ESP guitar.Zerberus said:IMO the Transtubes are better, but I have to agree with TO, they all suck

C'mon guys...the brother just asked for information, not biased opinions (is that redundant?). Tube snobbery aside, there is a difference between the versions Peavey produced.

This is the latest version. It has a couple of cool features not on the previous models. DEFINITELY get a 112S or later. The earliest versions (like T.O. had) are not as good.
Overall, the Bandit is a great "bang for buck" combo.

(I have the 112S...I don't use it much, but when I do I am reminded of why I keep it.).

Okay, here's a real answer. The transtubes are better. The newer ones are probably some the best all-transistor small combos available, and the price is great.
Even the older bandits can sound good, if you dump the scorpion or BW speaker and put in something decent. I actually have an original 50watt bandit with an EV SRO speaker (speaker cost more than the whole amp!) and while it doesn't sound as good as a good tube amp, its sounds pretty good. I put a good heavy blues overdrive in front of it and have turned the occasional head with my tone (and that was before I got the strat with duncans hehehe).
But your amp has to fit your style. I can get away with transitors these days.
If your buying new, have a serious look at the smaller Traynor offerings now. I played a 2x12 combo in a store latley for like 5 or 6 hundred bucks and it blew me away! Come to find out, it had a solid state pre-amp and an all tube power amp with Celestion speakers. Can't remember the model or the exact price, but it was an incredible value. The make a smaller 1x12 version, as well.
Now, if I could only find out how to get some power tubes into that old Bandit...

The older ones were extremely loud!!!!! Not the greatest tone machines but they were made well like most Peavey stuff is.... I always thought of these amps a good Clean amp.... The new TransTube stuff is a little better for OD compaired to the older ones.... Best clean sound i have ever heard in my life came from a early 90's 2x12 Peavey solid state combo..... Bell like tone.....

The "S" denoted the change from the Scorpion speaker to the Sheffield speaker. The newer models have a "modern/vintage" switch on the clean channel and a "modern/vintage/hi gain" switch on the lead channel. I think the new model is called the 112sx.
I tried the sx when it first was introduced, and I really liked the improvements. The only reason I haven't upgraded is because most of my playing is done with a direct send (to the mixer) from my POD xt Live. I use a monitor for my sound.
Ben (T.O.) plays hi-gain, shredder style rock with a lot of tube crunch/distortion/compression. He is correct in the sense that the Bandit cannot give him the sound he needs for HIS music to suit HIS ears. He also has some endorsements that help, and he plays professionally. Check out his band's website and listen to some of his soundclips here
Tim (Zerb) plays in a metal/techno group and has similar needs to Ben's. His style is quite different, and his needs are best met with a hi-gain tube amp. He has clips on his webpage as well.
However, depending on YOUR needs and YOUR finances, this might be a very good amp for YOUR purposes. That is all that matters.

fftopic: I have no experience with them. I guess, you can find better sounding amps out there for the price. Considering that you're most prolly a Sepu fan and would like to smash the concrete, a Bandit might not rock your boat.

I had to use a Bandit for many years and hated it. It was such POS!
Check out some some Fender Solid State amps, they should be in the same price range and sound way better IMO.
But don't get me Wrong I love Peavey! I use a Peavey Triumph 120 (all tube) head. The XXX, 6505- 5150, JSX and XXl ar all good amps.
I had to use a Bandit for many years and hated it. It was such POS!
