What is the best way to reproduce a Gibson faded type finish at home?

I’ve asked this before but I just want to get more feedback. I recently bought a faded cherry Gibson V and I want to refinish it in white with a Gibson faded type finish. This was the V that I was going to just tung oil but I’ve decided to go balls deep on this one.

What is the best way to reproduce a Gibson faded type finish at home?

I don’t have a spray booth or a gun I’m going to use the Preval Spray Unit that stewmac sells and this will be the first refinish I’ve tried.

This is going to be my between spring and summer semester project and will have just about 4 weeks to do it in. I need to order everything ASAP so I have it in two weeks to start. I plan on doing a big, picture intensive thread on this build.

Is this what I need to do it other than all the supplemental supplies like sandpaper and steel wool?

Don't use a grain filler

spray two coats of nitro color

sand down with 600 grit until you're seeing wood in places

pretty sure that's it.

Hmmm not so hot on the preval stuff, it is tough to get a good mix yourself if you have never used their products. Check what re-ranch has, got to be a white over there ready to go you can use. To go white get all that old red finish off.

You are going to go for the light distressed look no? So wood filler isn't going to be much of an issue if you sand it out well enough. A light sealer, reranch gorilla vanilla, a little sanding to get it how you want it to look and then a few coats of satin clear sanded to be even and you should be done.

i think the gibson faded finishes are the same as the high gloss finishes, but thinner/less coats, minus the grain filler and wet sanding/buffing ect.
