What is the difference between Les Paul Classic and Standard?

I am investigating my first LP purchase/trade, and I am by no means an expert on this instrument. Someone help educate me here... What is the difference in the Les Paul Classic and the Standard?

Re: What is the difference between Les Paul Classic and Standard?

I think the new Standard now comes with a chambered body to lighten the load? Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Heck, Gibson has so many little gimmicks to their guitars , it is hard to keep up with it all.

Re: What is the difference between Les Paul Classic and Standard?

Check out Gibsons website. Specs should al be listed there. That being said, they probably don't tell you ALL the differences. THe finishes look different on Classics than Standards to me...not sure why.

Some don't care for the Classic's "snot green" inlays.

Re: What is the difference between Les Paul Classic and Standard?

Yep, both models are chambered now.

I think the standard has the PLEK'd frets and uses different pups.

Also, if I understand correctly, the new standard only comes with the fat '50s style neck while the classic comes in only slim taper 60's.

The standard also has a flame maple top, while the classic has plain maple.

check out Gibson's website for more details.

Re: What is the difference between Les Paul Classic and Standard?

Well there's the Les Paul Standard pre- 2008, then Les Paul Standard 2008.

Before 2008, the difference was as follows. Plain maple top on classic vs. AA maple top on Classic. Ceramic hot open coil pickups on classic vs covered alnico pickups on the standard. White pearloid inlays on standard vs. aged "piss green" inlays on classic. Slim 60's neck on classic, choice of 60's or 50's neck on Standard.

The 2008 Standard is completely different- with upgraded pots, locking tuners, different pickups, PLEK'd frets, etc...

Re: What is the difference between Les Paul Classic and Standard?

i have a 2003 gibson les paul classic and it has a solid body v.s. a chambered on the '08standard. the pickups on the classic are a 496R and a 500T (which are the hottest pickups gibson makes) and they both have a ceramic magnets v.s. the standard hase (I think) burstbucker pros with alnico V magents. classic hase plain top (with a prefer) v.s. the standard have a flame tope. classic has a slim 60's neck v.s. the classic has a fat 50's neck. classic has geenish pearl fretboard markers v.s. the white pearl markers on the standard. The classic is a reissue of a 1960's les paul standard with modern pickups and a few other things and the '08 standard is a regular standard with upgrades. Oh and the classic is being dicontinued this year. the classic runs abou $1,899-$2,199 an dim not 100% on the new standard but i think it runs about $2,300-$2,500

Re: What is the difference between Les Paul Classic and Standard?

I just looked on the Gibson site and it said the LP Classic was discontinued! Dammit! I liked the Classics more than the Standards!

it is discontinued starting this year, so it will take them a little while to empty out there stock, so they should be around for a little while. i ordered one of the last kramer (gibson owned) 1985 baretta reissue from them a year after it was discontinued. so you can count on the classic being around for at least a year before they are completely gone

Re: What is the difference between Les Paul Classic and Standard?

There's also a Classic model that came with the '57 Classic/Classic Plus combo, the Classic Antique if I'm not mistaken. Great playing LP. The other guitarist in my band has one.

yup forgot about that one. its being discontinued too! :banghead:

Re: What is the difference between Les Paul Classic and Standard?

Gibson had some a pretty decent shakeup of Les Pauls for 2008

Historically- Classics have the snot green/yellow inlays, 60s profile neck, open coil 500T/496R pups, 1960 mark on the pg, and a plain maple top- they were also available in solid black.

But once they started the GOTW and now GOTM garbage they've put out some "classic" models that do not fit in the "classic" category specs of the past.

ya they have all these crappy looking "holy" flying v's and stuff. they are not "classics" they are more futuristic guitars. i dont like em

Dang, that stinks. That model is a really good one. I'm not one for 24 3/4" scale guitars but when I played that one of my bud's, it felt really comfortable, not too heavy, great sound. Just an all-around really nice playing guitar.

Re: What is the difference between Les Paul Classic and Standard?

ya i like the '57 classics WAY better than the 496R and 500T in the regular classic. the first thing i did when i got my classic way swap out those croppy ceramic humbuckers for a pair of SD alnico II pros.

Re: What is the difference between Les Paul Classic and Standard?

Yea as an owner I can say the Les Paul Classic is pretty cool. I got the sunburst color and i swapped the pickups for 57s. Now I just gotta put a hole in it so I can have sex with it, then my life is complete.

If the Classic's snot green inlays turn you off here's what happens to them when they're left out in the sun to bake a little...

Huh! Check that out! I wonder why that happens?

Is that your personal guitar or someone else's?

I saw that on the Les Paul Forum too. It's widely known- if you leave the Les Paul Classic out in the sun (like in your front window- etc..) the snot green inlays lose the snot green color- and turn into an almost abalone appearance- which IMO looks nicer than the Les Paul Standard Pearloid inlays

Just like jmh151, I read this on the Les Paul Forum. I've been considering trying this with mine, but I just haven't gotten around to it. I'm sure the thread is still out there on the LP forum if anyone wants to check it out. The guy talks about each step that he went through to achieve this. For example, the smaller inlays only needed a day while the larger ones needed two days. He said he covered the guitar body with a towel and on the second day he also covered the smaller inlays so only the larger ones would get two full days of sunlight. I think it's a big improvement...

Re: What is the difference between Les Paul Classic and Standard?

I've never played a genuine Les Paul Standard, but I played a Les Paul Classic a few weeks ago and I was NOT blown away. It was worse in looks, playability and sound than my SD fitted Epiphone Black Beauty, and it also weighed a lot less.
I didn't know what Les Paul Classics were at the time and assumed it was some kind of cheap crappy Gibson version of a Standard. Then I checked the prices on ebay.

The world's gone mad. I'm telling you, this Epiphone of mine 'kin blew that Gibson "Classic" out the water in every way. Even the owner of the Classic was stunned. I don't know how anyone can justify the price.
