+1 ^^ Pretty much. As much as I wanted to throw in some double cut guitars or my favorite guitar; Gibson CS 356s, they're aren't as iconic. I also have personal year preferences, but that's not what you usually think of when you hear the guitar name.

Speaking of which, if we must state years;

Iconic
Les Paul ('59)
Tele ('52)
Strat ('62)
335 ('64)

Or

My preference
Les Paul ('52-53, '68-'69, any historic year)
Tele (Broadcaster '50 [?])
Strat ('62 or '68-69)
335 ('65-'69)

I want my Ibanez in as well
But it falls in the super strat category with Kramer, Charvel, and Jackson
I suppose Suhr and Anderson does as well

PRS are great as well

I really see a.Strat as an evolution of a Tele

Les Paul is it's own thing

Semi hollow 335 or Gretch ( is that spelled right?)
There is a whole sub group of music built around those sounds

Keytar should have a place

Vees, Explorers, Iceman, wangcaster, etc.
These are shapes not necessarily icons

Would a.bass be appropriate?

Unmistakable when you hear it on a recording

So I would.like to modify my first list

Funny, I see the Tele and Strat as two separate yet equally awesome guitars. To me they sound/feel very different.

I agree with your assessment of the superstrat categories though. Somewhat different designs but all closely related. I lumped them all together in my Mount.

First you have Camaro vs Mustang. That's clearly Strat vs LP

After that there are Malibu Nova Firebird LeMans Judge Chevelle vs Torino Fairlane Falcon which would be SG Explorer V 335 vs Tele Jaguar Mustang. Rickenbacker Gretsch Vox are Charger Challenger Barracuda. I'd say top 4 are:

But the SG was called the Les Paul initially

So wouldn't it be the evolution of

It's like you have two guitars and variants of the same two guitars

I feel like there's a big gap after that. The ES-335 is fine, sure. I would consider the ES-175, Flying V, Ibanez RG, Probably a few others.

My response is based solely upon your inclusion of the niche Parker Fly. It isn't even on the radar for Mountrushmore of guitars.

I thought Steinberger or Parker both had radical changes to the basic design of the guitar that stuck. For years every hairbrained idea and mod has been thrown at us these were two that improved the world of guitars. I decided to go with Parker because you seem to see more of them out in the wild.

Does the SG out sell Les Pauls?? I see far more people playing LPs. Of course, now that LPs sell for the price of a used car, it wouldnt suprise me if SGs were selling more

Gibson is a privately held company that I doubt they publish that data. It would be very valuable to the folks that build copies and counterfeits. I have seen old Gibson sales data from the 50's and 60's but nothing as of late. There might be something in an article out there stating what their best seller is; I doubt there would be any numbers or concrete data.

And the reason why the Gibson SG outsells the Les Paul guitar because it's far more cheaper or inexpensive which makes it a very desirable guitar to own. They usually go for around $1,000 or so while an LP Standard can run you around $2,500 and up depending. And also the Gibson SG is more ergonomically comfortable to play and the upper fret access is superb. I paid around $1,000 for my 90's Gibson SG Special w/ an ebony fret board and hard-shell case which I thought was a great deal at the time. Les Paul guitars are great but way over-priced.
