What is the worst med-gain distortion pedal out there ?

Re: What is the worst med-gain distortion pedal out there ?

Official answer: There are no bad medium distortion pedals.

There are only pedals for which you have not found a time or place where they shine.

This actually was my very first distortion pedal. The video is hilarious, but the truth is I never really remember managing to get it to sound anywhere near as 'good' as it does here... :D

That first clip at ~1:20 would sound pretty killer with a little delay. Last clip at 3:00 was pretty ok too....

Wow, I can't believe the DS-1 hate in here. I think it's a very usable pedal for many situations. Satriani, Steve Vai, and Mike Stern all seem to agree.

Because most people buy it and stick in front a clean channel and expect it to sound like a big marshall stack. That is why people mod them to sound that way.

The pedal was not designed for that, it was designed to take a jacked up old Fender/Marshall/HiWatt,.etc. amp without enough gain (for the player in question) over the top.

IOW, people buy a hammer and try to use it as a screwdriver, then claim the hammer sucks.

Really hated the SD-1 from boss... cuts bass big time and was nasally and honky no matter how I tweaked it

I was not aware that it was a overdrive. I assumed that because it's marked as a distortion pedal it could be used as the main box for gain not to augment what is already there. With that information, I might try it out later on if I ever get a multi-channel amp, but I don't think it would work very well with my POD or my single channel Peavey. For $30 if it can color up the tone enough on something such as a jacked Marshall, it would be worth investing.

In 1977/78 when the DS1 was introduced, before multichannels, and heavy gain circuits in most amps (mesa was doing the cascaded peeamps, but they were not common) people used pedals to enhance what they had...single channels, often NMV,.as MVs were in their infancy. there was not the distinction between overdrives and distortions like now. When the D+ and DS1 became popular, everyone started classifying pedals into different categories, but they performed the same function.

Ok. I get that overall goal is to add some form of clipping to the sound whether from adding gain (distortion or overdrive pedals) or actually clipping the signal (fuzz pedals). I was not aware of the DS-1's history, and as I stated before it does not change that for me it is not a useful pedal to be in my arsenal currently.

Re: What is the worst med-gain distortion pedal out there ?

I don't think it qualifies as medium gain but I used to have a DOD American Metal pedal. It was everything I thought metal should be...when played through an AM radio in an old pickup truck, stranded along a busy highway with a nearly dead battery. The only good setting was bypass.

Re: What is the worst med-gain distortion pedal out there ?

I like an old stock DS1. Gary Moores best tones ever were an old DS1 into his JMP and 800 1959s.

My modded DS1, a MXR Badass 78, drives me nuts. They have shifted the EQ and upped gain which makes it sound worse. I use it, but I can think of a bunch of pedals I would rather have in it's place.

When I was using my DS-1, as I recall it was initially in front of a big ol' 100 watt 80s era Marshall superbass JCM 800 which had been repurposed as a guitar amp. It actually got the job done but as time went on I got sick of the way it sounded, and to be honest I think maybe something broke in it and it started sounding even more obnoxious.

Re: What is the worst med-gain distortion pedal out there ?

I think it depends upon whose hands a given device is in ... some people can make rubbish sound excellent, some people can make the very best gear sound dreadful.

Re: What is the worst med-gain distortion pedal out there ?

DOD Hard Rock Distortion Delay, only pedal that I couldn't find some use for think there is plenty of use in DS-1s, SD-1s, Ibanez CM-5, DOD Death Metal, Metal Zone, FAB Distortion. Maybe they arent all great sounds but they can have their uses.

I agree! I had the DOD Hard Rock Distortion pedal and it was useless.

Oh the metal zone is an amazing pedal when tweaked right with a clean amp
