What is this SG?

This ad says that it's a "Heritage Cherry Burst Flame", but to me it looks like a looks like a normal SG standard (the price for this used one is higher than a new sg standard btw). But I've never seen mahogany that looks like that, could it be maple top? Here's the CL ad if you want more pics:

Re: What is this SG?

It could be a maple top, or figured mahogany. Not all 'hog is unfigured. I'm not seeing the "Burst" part, though. Heritage Cherry, yes, but not "Burst".

Re: What is this SG?

He even says its a standard a couple times in the description. I think hes just throwing in the sunburst thing either ignorance or just trying to attract attention. But nothing about it says its anything other than an SG standard. The figuring is kinda cool though not seen too often but it does occur

Re: What is this SG?

Just found the pix.

The model number is right there: SGS-HCCH1

My guess on that model number would be SG Standard, Heritage Cherry, Chrome Hardware...and that the figuring is just good luck.

Strange that is has fake-yellowed binding, inlay, and keystones. I thought those silly things were only used on the quote-unquote reissues. Too bad. Kind of uglies the guitar a bit IMO. Or maybe it is just the photographs that make it seem that way.

He is asking $1,350. Weren't these guitars only $1,200 or so when new?

Why is it so strange? The cream binding was and is standard on Gibson SG standards. I dont see where the inlays or the tuners are out of the norm either been a part of the same package for a long time.

Your right about the price hes nuts what hes asking for it. A brand new SG standard off the shelf will cost you 1200 let alone a used 05 hes looking at 900 if he can find a buyer who is just tickled with the figuring.

Re: What is this SG?

It is weird to me perhaps just because of flawed memory. I confess I haven't played a new Standard in a shop since about 2004 or 2005. But my memory, which may be wrong, based on what you say, tells me that the small-guard reissue had yellowed inlays, pegs, and binding, while the Standards had white binding, fresh-looking inlays, and whiter tuner keys. I am probably wrong about the white binding, and it is just the photos that make the inlays and keys look yellowed.

Yeah the inlays do look a bit yellow... Maybe its the lighting. My 96 standard has cream binding my 07 61 reissue has that butt ugly orangish aged cream binding. But maybe that changed over the years. My memory just always has standards as being cream. It sticks in my mind cause in high school I had a 94 celebrity series which was a ebony SG standard but with gold hardware and white binding. After i sold it and went to find another SG i drove myself nuts trying to find one with white binding. Wish I never would have sold that guitar...

Re: What is this SG?

Hi,

Yes, that butt-ugly orange binding and the piss-dunked inlays are exactly what I am talking about. From glancing at the photos, I thought this guitar had the "aged" binding...but I see now that it is just cream.

Not sure when they started using cream binding on Standards. My '68's is white where exposed, and yellow where covered with clear coat. (My '83 LP Custom is the same.) My Epi Japanese model (probably '90's) and the stolen Elitist that it replaced (2003) both had white. I prefer white, personally. I think it compliments the cherry body better, and having the cream neck binding with a b/w/b pick guard looks a little bit "off" to me.

Based on your examples, perhaps the change from white to cream first appeared in '95 or '96 models.

Surprised Gibby let a flamed mahogany SG go out and not make it a Custom Shop piece, that is beautiful.

Re: What is this SG?

It looks like maple, as if it's an SG Supreme.

Actually, though it's not a standard model, don't be suprised if it was a limited run for some retailer like Guitar Center

Look at the code on the hang tag in the pictures on CL. It says exactly what it is.

You can tell its not maple look at the grain patterns on the front and back particularly twords the rear of the guitar. You can see they are the same piece of wood. Its figured mahogany.
