What is/was the worst pedal you ever had?

Re: What is/was the worst pedal you ever had?

17 posts and nobody mentioned Boss Metal Zone....

What's up ? :firing:

Forgot. Yeah, I had a Metal Zone twice, and both times I ended up thinking it was terrible. I would have loved it when I was a kid with an 8" practice amp.

Haha, I can't believe I forgot that. The only setting where it sounded 'somewhat' decent was in the factory preferred heavy metal setting. The rest well...

Re: What is/was the worst pedal you ever had?

LOL, every pedal Danelectro ever made!!!

Actually, I've got a love/hate relationship with the original Fab Tones. It was the only pedal I owned from the ages of 15-17 & I kinda learned to embrace the "Cheesy-ness". I still have one but it doesn't quite have the same appeal it used to for some reason, probably because I have guitar picks that had more thought go into their design & tonal quality???

Actually, I dug the Surf & Turf compressor, which sounds and works really good for all sorts of signals. I still use mine.

This bad boy:

If you were on a tight budget in the mid 90s, chances are you had one of these at some point.

Soundwise it was probably better than the un-modded Metal Zone I used to have.
But it was so flimsy and noisy it loses.

Also, the EHX Metal Muff + Top Boost. A slightly more flexible Metal Zone with the same fake, congested and stiff high-end.
I had a Metal Zone with the Diezel mod and I swear it killed the Metal Muff tonewise. Sold them both in the end.

I've had other pedals I haven't liked (MXR Dynacomp...) but those are the only ones I thought were honestly dog****.

I used to have a Metal Zone too. Hated the distortion too, but as a very dirty/gritty boost it was usable. Kinda.

Re: What is/was the worst pedal you ever had?

Digitech RP series. I'd rather plug my guitar into a Sega Genesis.

I've had an RP-6, an RP-14d, an RP-50, and an RP-100, and they all sounded like dry macaroni from a 49-cent box.

Re: What is/was the worst pedal you ever had?

The Dano Fab Overdrive was a great pedal in a plastic case!

I have to put in a vote for the Metal Zone too, I've seen clips on youtube of modded ones that sound pretty good, but even with a lot of mods, I've never been able to find a use for one.

Without ever trying one of those Digitech RP units myself, I'll take a shot and say the Zoom 505 a friend gave me to try for a week when I was 16 was just as bad, if not worse.

I totally forgot about the Zoom because I never owned it, but holy **** was it awful.
The bypass was so bad it buried every frequency over 4k or something.

I just cannot imagine anything being worse than that damn Zoom pedal. Easily the worst multiFX unit I'll play in my life.

Re: What is/was the worst pedal you ever had?

Well, the 505 and 505 II did blow wide open ass, and they were probably worse that the RP's I mentioned.

Re: What is/was the worst pedal you ever had?

Even the worst pedals I've ever owned were probably better than I thought they were at the time. I guess I'll pick on Danelectro. The Daddy-O didn't sound like much to me, regardless of how much I wanted to like it. I just couldn't imagine someone making a pedal sound like that on purpose. The Cool Cat Metal had the misfortune of placing concentric knobs on the front of the pedal; I got fed up with the ergonomic arrangement and sold it. Kind of a shame, because it didn't sound bad. I ended up with a Mesa Throttle Box.

The Daddy O is a miserable ***** to dial-in because all three EQ bands are very interactive--you change one--even a teeny bit, and it'll change the others too. Once you have it dialled-in though--wow. Great, great OD/Distortion.

Re: What is/was the worst pedal you ever had?

Thomas Organ CryBaby. Wasn't a wah pedal, it was just a wh' pedal.

Second place is the boss metal zone my parents gave me for my birthday one year. It was in a briefcase with my cables that got stolen at a gig. God I miss those cables.

Surprised to read that the wah pedal didn't work out.Was is just too retro?

If my metal zone was stolen along with cables, I too would miss the cables lol

The only reason I'm replying is that recently I tried the vst PA version and thought that it was brilliant for leads and certain combos. But the pedal I always hated. Then again, the DS-1 was a pedal I always liked, but I hate the PA version.

Go figure.

The key phrase there is Thomas Organ. There are many different versions and constructions of the CryBaby. Thomas Organ was the bottom of the heap. It sounded like Thomas' organ.

Re: What is/was the worst pedal you ever had?

Boss Power Stack, sounds ok but just too noisy. I can keep the noise under control with the ISP Decimator Gstring ii but don't you dare let a note to naturally decay as it will bring that horrible noise very quickly. And I have not been able to sell the damn thing.

Re: What is/was the worst pedal you ever had?

I can't fully remember if it was truly bad, or just a reflection of the garbage my friend was running it through, but I wasn't impressed with the hot pink DOD Thrash Master. I don't hear many people pining for them today either, so it must not be considered a timeless classic....

Of course, we were using it with his POS Squier Strat through an even bigger POS Gorilla 1x8, so it did have an uphill battle!
