What is woody sounding?

Re: What is woody sounding?

In a word, Synergy. That's classic! I think I know which film that's from.

So really, there is no woody sounding pickup. Thanks wanmei1. I actually tend to agree with that. It really is a result of all the components in the chain of that individual rig, whether someting sounds woody, and to me, that sound is like a bow striking a cello.

Transparent means you can hear the strings is kind of funny though. What do you hear on the non-transparent pups? So if I can hear the wood, my pup isn't transparent?

Re: What is woody sounding?

+1 to the description of the sound of a cello and the sound when you knock on a piece of wood. When a guitar's body is resonant and the pickups accurately hear that information, you get that sound. There's a certain bloom (more audio adjectives, I know) and fullness to the sound. That bloom is a dynamics thing, and that sound like the sound when you hit wood is a timbre thing.

If you've ever played a guitar with a plexiglass body, or one with a graphite neck, you may have noticed a certain quality missing. It may have sounded kind of thin, sterile, lifeless. Or in the case of my bass with a graphite neck and an active pickup, the sound isn't thin or lifeless, but it's very hi-fi. It's so clean sounding that it suggests the sound of synthetic materials and steel, not wood.

Re: What is woody sounding?

I saw where someone said the the bridge STK-S4 is to woody sounding sometimes & was wondering what this meant.

To me, woody sounding is when you have a sound that's crisp and natural, but also has this kind of snappy bass / lower frequency presence / oomph to it, like you're knocking on a wooden table.

Re: What is woody sounding?

if the tone of a specific pickup is particularly inspiring...it may cause them to sport a tremendous woody...

Here is another that confuses me. I saw where they said that the pickup was to weedy?

Yup, I've always dug the cello analogy. Truth is, the electric guitar most of us play is a bastard. It is "vulgar" and compressed, and I would never have it any other way! :headbang:

No matter how much people want to claim how a particular electrified guitar may sound "woody", the closest most will ever get is setting a classical guitar on a stand, next the amps cab...and making the classical guitar boom and howl with sympathetic tones.

I prefer really really ugly tones, and accept them. :)

Not true at all.
Any hollowbody electric or semi hollow with the right pickup will give you a woody . ( sound of course )
I have a Gibson Es-335 with Gibson Classic 57's that dishes out wood by the Cello full.

I once put my woody in a chicks ear and asked her how it sounded..is that waht you mean??

Re: What is woody sounding?

Well that's really a big help. Now I really for sure don't know if I would like a STK-S4 in bridge or not.

imo, woody sounding would describe having an almost acoustic quality, having a good bit of warmth and and chunk, but not in a metal/hard rock sense, more of a feel thing. i wouldn't go for something 'woody' in the bridge, rather in the middle and/or neck. i'd go for something a little more gutsy in the bridge. not familiar with single coils, i'm sure you could get some great recommedations here for what you might be looking for however. what kind of tone are you going for? what kind of amp do you have? things like that would be useful info to those looking to help you sculpt your tone.

Weedy = thin sounding lacking midrange presence.

A lot of Strats sound thin with standard single coil pickups.

The opposite to a weedy thin sound would be a Les Paul which has a rich and full sound.

Re: What is woody sounding?

I got a STK4 neck & middle pickup in the mail yesterday & put them in & I am very impressed. Was sceptical because I have been through many pickups in my life & these are very nice. SSL2's with out the ice pick tone with just a very little more mids. Just what i was looking for. Much more ballanced with the Little 59er in the bridge. also i worried about whether or not they would work with my 10-16' compund radius but they work perfect with it. I am going to stick with the little 59er for bridge for now. I think I will wait and check the STK$ bridge pickup out when they update it.
