I know I've heard some smack talkin' about Bill Lawrence pickups, what about his stock from the 70's, the L-550 and 560 in particular?

They do? Remind me never to buy a Bill Lawrence pick up again, I just can't stand it when people do such things, especially being a company you should be able to stand above such things and focus on your own work. They've got an extremely long waiting time as well.

I think my L500XL sounds great, and traded it with a friend of mine, it was in complete mint condition when I got it. I wouldn't order it myself though, they make great pick ups true, but I like Duncans and some DiMarzios better for some reason :smack:

Re: What is you opinion of Bill Lawrence pickups?

These are supposedly NOS unopened from the 1970s. The package says "Bill Larencw products, Made In The USA". That's about it. It's a two coil sized humbucker shaped to fit in a P-90 slot. I can't find ay listings, one review on HC, so it seems legit. When did he start farming out his pickups?

I don't have any experience with this model, but I'd read somewhere that Bill Lawrence pickups from the 70's were not wax potted, so they may be prone to microphonics.

And Bill has never farmed out his pickups - he left the company that made the pickups you're considering (www.billlawrenceusa.com), back in '84 and then started a number of new companies (OBL, Keystone, Wilde USA).

I know you're partly being funny, but I thought I'd help sort out the multiple Bill Lawrence businesses:

There used to be only one, since '84 there've been two (but one keeps changing names)

Up to 1984 - Bill Lawrence Products only (www.billlawrenceusa.com)
After 1984 - Bill Lawrence Products AND:
OBL ('85 - '87)
Keystone ('90? - '96?)
Wilde USA ('96? - now) (www.billlawrence.com)

Bill Lawrence Products is still owned by EZ Wajcman, Bill's original partner. In '84 Bill left to start OBL. Then he sold the OBL trademark to Gibson. Then he started the other companies.

The Stew-Macs were made by Bill Lawrence Products - they still sell through a lot of retail and mail order places.

Fender does not make "Bill Lawrence" pickups - Bill just helped design their new SCN pickups.

Re: What is you opinion of Bill Lawrence pickups?

Actually, Rumor has it that his name is Willie Stich not Bill Lawrence.

Re: What is you opinion of Bill Lawrence pickups?

Oh man this is too funny....I had to ressurect this. Now Who is the real deal....once and for all? Anybody? How would you compare these to The dimebucker the revised model.

Re: What is you opinion of Bill Lawrence pickups?

Why bother figuring all this garbage out....it's easier to just go with one of the other brands.

I don't know what's so confusing about this - it's similar to the Fender situation: There's the Fender company and then there's the companies that Leo owned after leaving Fender (Musicman, G&L).

In this case, there's Bill Lawrence Products and then there's the companies that Bill (Mr. Stich) owned after leaving BL Products (OBL, Keystone, WildeUSA). One big difference is that, unlike Fender, BL Products is still owned by one of the original founders.

Get it?

Yeah I get it.......I'll go to Billlawrence.com The AUTHENTIC Pups. LOL

In that case, be sure to go to G&L for "authentic" Fender products! LOL
