I like it from the amp best but sometimes that's not always ideal. My all-time favorite is the old Boss OD-1.

With ya on the from the amp.

If I do need gain, I am using an Allums modded Boss SD-1. Years back I used Tube Screamers.

While I have used the SD-1 as a boost, I usually prefer my EH LPB-1 in that role.

Bone stock Tubescreamers and the mighty SD-1. I never have and still don't have any desire for any of the boutique stuff
For the price, the SD-1 is just exceptional really.
I tend to use drive/gain on zero on these pedals. Tone usually slightly left of 12o clock, and level set to either unity gain or higher for a hint of compression.
Sometimes I also like an EQ pedal as a boost

I'm currently using Joyo Vintage Overdrive, however my ultimate one would be Black Arts Toneworks Black Forest OD / Fuzz which I'm saving for.
