What is your opinion of this amp trade situation?

I traded my Laney TT50 1x12 combo for a JSX head from this jerk on HC. I got it all beat up by UPS, but it still worked fine. I told him about the dents on the head case and the beat up box so I could the headshell replaced by UPS and he flipped out.

In fact he started flipping out from the start which made me a little nervous about dealing with him, but I had to keep my promise to deliver the deal. If I didn't maintain multiple daily email communication with him he would freak out and start accusing me of stupid stuff.

Finally his TT50 came in and he claims it was damaged by FedEx. In my experience this is much much more common with UPS than FedEx so I doubt he is telling the truth. In any case, he said that he was super disappointed with the trade because he claims the Laney TT50 is a "thin sounding piece of ****" that's incapable of producing a decent tone.

Obviously Steve Smith's "TEN" album proves that wrong since it's the amp he used to record that album, but I also have a sound clip I provided him before we made the deal. I can't imagine any reasonable person saying something so far fetched about the amp. I know it may not be for everyone but his description sounds as if he didn't play it at all or totally bought the BS he read on HC before he even received it.

Of course I will never expect to impress a single soul with my playing but I thought it would be helpful if I miced up the amp and recorded a short demo through a fairly neutral mic (e609).

His later comments were that I'm a S***ty player. I don't think I'm THAT bad but my recording seems to sound fairly decent. Well you decide and let me know what you think.

By the way I was scrolling through some HC threads and found one he started and everything he told me was a regurgitation of what other HC village idiots speculated. You could tell only 1 of them ever really played a TT50 and he was the one that praised it.

Well let me know your opionions. I don't know if I am a sucky player or not or if my tone sucks too but your opinion will be helpful for helping me improve.

If that's s***ty playing than I am a smurfette named Imelda in a skirt. I think that TT50 sounds damn good. Sounds like you got hooked up with a world class ******bag.

I heard Harmony Central and UPS. That's all I needed to hear. You're both stuck with your decision to trade. Just cut it off with him now, and be done.

Luckily your new amp has a headshell that's very easy to retolex. If it bothered me enough, I'd rip the tolex off, sand it smooth, buy some tolex and 3M spray glue. Is it really that bad though?

I'd wait till next summer, take a vacation to his city, give a cab driver 500 bucks to drive by his house at 4 am and throw a brick through his window with a message inscribed- "I'll be back".

The tolex is fine on my amp. There dents but but nothing bad enough to damage the structural integrity of the headshell. It's a solid heavy head but I'm glad it is because if it can survive the abuse of UPS then it says a lot for Peavey amps.

Guy sounds like a real toolbox, forget about it and enjoy your new amp.

Proof, if ever it were needed, that the only real way to assess any potential gear purchase is to get your paws on it and play.

The other problem is unrealistic expectations. A great many customers build up some fantasy about how amazing they will sound when their new equipment arrives. If the anticipated "miracle" does not materialise without effort, they go into Whine mode.

When my MESA/Boogie Quad Pre-Amp first arrived, I could not get a decent sound out of it no matter what I did. Eventually, there was nothing left to try except...
RTFM.

To me, it is patently obvious that UMD has some well-founded opinions about amplification whereas his customer needs reading lessons.

Thanks for the compliment. On a side note, I'd love to get my hands on a Mesa Rectifier preamp. I tried one through the FX of a Fender Deluxe vm and was getting awesome tones out of it. What didn't you like about the Mesa pre?

I would send him to hell from the very first time and if he'd make the mistake to come and find me I'd put my d**k in his mouth.

You play great and the amp sounds pretty professional to me.
