What kind of capacitors are used for seymour duncan? Mylar or Ceramic?

Hello Guys,

I just want to ask to be sure, i am no expert and needs help.
The wiring diagrams shows capacitor values but not the units.
for example for humbuckers it is recommended to use 0,047 capacitor,
and for single coils it is 0,022.
But it is not mentioned if it is a ceramic or mylar capacitor.
Mylars are rated as microfahrad while the ceramics are in pico-fahrads.
The manuals with the pick ups does not specify either though the drawing shows disk type which are mostly ceramic type.

So which one is it, microfahrad(mylar-green) or pico fahrad (ceramic-brown color)

i made some research and found that material will impact the quality of the capacitors only and not the tone.
Well my problem actually is the tone.
I do not Know what pots and capacitor will i use to mix an SH-13 (dimebuckers) with an STK-2 and and stk s9b. anyone out there who can help?

0,047 ufd

If it was in Pf it would be 473 [Pf]

and 0,022./223

It's the rated value and the tolerance that matter IME, not the type.

I use the same .02 caps for singles and for humbuckers and I don't use ceramic disc caps. I use Sprague Orange Drops or, since I already have some, Hovland Musicaps. Although I agree that in a guitar's tone circuit the material that the cap is made from is probably unimportant, I use real good caps anyway.

Sheer snob appeal - plus I know my guitar sounds its best even though my own hearing is unable to detect an improvement or change in tone with the more expensive caps.

If you cant hear it then you cant "know" its best your assuming the sprauges sound better but if you cant hear it you dont "know" that really ya dig?

It doesn't really matter what type you use.

I use orange drops or Mallory 150s purely because I have them on hand for building amps and theyre a bit sturdier.

This website shows you how little difference there is across most capacitors

Theres only really low voltage ceramics that exhibit any radically different behaviour.

I suppose.

It's like when you look under the hood of a custom street rod. You expect to see quality.

I feel that way about my guitars so I use the high quality caps like Orange Drops. They look better than cheap disc caps.

And just in case there is some difference in tone or feel that my ears or musical sensitivity can't detect, I use caps that are generally known or regarded as being high quality.

That way I know I'm covered. :fingersx: Plus, they look better...just like the quality parts under the hood of a well done custom street rod. Just pride in my work I guess.

Wont fault ya for that :smokin:.

Thanks Gypsy blue..rightnow i think my case is i am mixing a single coil sized humbucks with a bridge humbucker. if i will try the 250k pot with my sh13 the review says the sound will be muddier..though i don't know what it really sounds but i will have to try. i don't have a 250K / 500K stack pot yet..later i will do that to give my P/U the recommended pots values. The STK s2 and STL S9b sounds to thin or bright with the 500K and 0,047 uF cap.

I like Orange Drops and PIO. It really doesn't matter, the schematic is recommending a value, not a type. Even then, you can change the value to your preference. I usually prefer .022 in the bridge and .015 for the neck. On Fenders and P90 Junior types I like .047
