What kind of distortion pedal do you use for your Tube amp ?

Re: What kind of distortion pedal do you use for your Tube amp ?

How many times have you heard of guys like Malmsteen who use their od's all the time and control the basic sound with the volume knob for solos? Alot of those guys used Marshall Plexis (which are not high gain amps) and used a tube screamer or another overdrive device to push the amp over the edge. I subscribe to that theroy and use a MXR Micro amp in the effects loop for my lead boost.

I love the sound of my amp's gain, but I run a Line 6 DM4 Distortion Modeler through the clean channel for a wider variety of tones. I just get bored with the same sound and like to play around with it.

I use my Hughes and Kettner combo on the drive channel with the gain on or below 2 (depends how much saturation i feel like) The i use a Boss Blues Driver to drive it a little harder. The amp on its own gives what i call my Thin Lizzy type drive. Then for more gain i hit my Blues Driver to give it a little kick. I wouldn't call my tone high gain, but i have all the sounds i need. For clean i just roll the volume back on my guitar, as much as i like the clean channel on the amp, i hardly ever use it. I've never liked the results i've gotten from running an OD into a clean channel, but i couldn;t live without putting a pedal on my gain channel, seems more focused/ less muddy and buzzy that way.

well, when first seeing the thread title I thought,
"you have a tube amp, why the heck do you need a distortion pedal?!"

my thoughts remain the same.

+1 Your amp should be provide the distortion, this typically makes better tones instead of relying on pedals. Needs a lot more distortion you need than it can provide I would maybe look into another amp. If it's just a little bit more distortion you need ds-1's work pretty good.

Re: What kind of distortion pedal do you use for your Tube amp ?

I use a SparkleDrive (TS 808) for a subtle bluesy tone and a Marshall Jackhammer for a classic rock tone.

Re: What kind of distortion pedal do you use for your Tube amp ?

... sounds like its up to individual preference whether or not to use pedals.

All I can say about it is "two channel."

You know, I probably shouldn't have even said that much. Rob, do you know how to erase a post?

By the way Evan, I just read your "How I got started.." thread and it was really inspiring. I love hearing about people finding their calling-it helps me to push on to finding mine. Even though I'm in over-the-hill territory, there's still something better for me out there.

I'm just an at home player. I'm using a Phat Axx pedal thru my Fender DRRI and lately thru my Carvin V16. (How much volume do you need at home?) I don't like the sound of either amps natural gain and that's why I'm using a pedal. I'd love to find an amp who's natural drive tone would work for me but I have'nt found it yet. This past weekend I brought home a Marshall DSL 50 head to try out but it had way too much volume for my needs. Even with my THD Hotplate hooked up it was still to much. The tone was there alright and I loved it. But damn, way too loud. The search goes on.
