I'd gladly play for the right relic....

But I like the finish in good shape, doesn't need to be perfect. A ding here and there is OK and I do like finish checking.

I'm cool with most, in fact the only box I didn't tick was heavily abused but playable. By abused, I don't want a guitar that been used as a cricket bat, I don't want a guitar that has been modded to the extent of being butchered and hacked to pieces however good it plays or sounds. Other than that I'm good.

I'm always prepared to buy a Kramer. I purchase no projects, just don't have time anymore.

Although my current purchase is a Jackson.

I like them old and showing it. I attach far more easily to beaters than case queens.

To each his own. I want 'case queens', that don't look like they've been thru a few bar fights.

I rarely buy new. I trade guitars all the time though. I avoid anything that has damage to the headstock or neck. I don't usually go for guitars that someone has modified more than minor details on. My biggest concern is that it has very little fret wear, and everything works. Most aftermarket "relic" jobs are code for a "beat up piece of crap", so I don't pay for that.

a bit of normal wear is acceptable
I would consider wah-wah's Strat
but not broken or previously on fire

This is exactly what I mean. It is fine with me, but not something that has been abused badly. To me abused is diff from wear and tear.
yeah Imagine using a guitar that Criss Gayle used for some net practice with Curtly Ambrose.

Given a choice between to identical guitars lets say 2 contemporary teles one with medium to heavy wear and one an almost Case queen. I would go with the case queen .

I really don't like the principle of relic'd guitars. I'm sorry, but if you want a worn and played guitar, you should buy a good condition guitar and make your own story with it.

I don't care if other people like 'em, to each their own, I don't hold it against the people who do like buying already relic'd, but I just don't do it myself.

Honest question, how do you feel about distressed furniture? If you feel differently about it than you do relic'd guitars, why?

I get what you are saying and agree. Buying a Brand New Relic Guitar is just not what I would do. Second hand, if the guitar plays good and feels good to me, I would go for it, not because of the looks but because it plays,sounds and feels good, to me. There are a lot of chances of me even refinishing the guitar, depending on which guitar it is .

Some people might think warn guitars sound better, I think I've even seen rock stars quoted to that effect, and I wonder if in fact the removal of some finish allows the wood to dry out more quickly and become more resonant. Polyurethane finished guitars are encased in the stuff, it doesn't breath at all, so unless I'm mistaken, if the finish remains intact, the moisture content of the body is pretty much static, and so there's no reason it's sound would improve with age.
