What kind of humbucker best for Bass??

I’m wiring a custom made bass and I’d like to use a passive humbucker, but not sure what type of humbuckers would have the best output. Anyone know a humbucker that works well on basses? Do I need a preamp?

What shape rout have you got? is it a MusicMan style, or something different??

You don't really need a preamp since most basses use passive electronics. There's really little difference between a guitar and a bass pickup. At their heart both are a coil of copper wire and magnets. Most pickups can be used on a variety of stringed instruments. However bass pickups may have some slight differences to optimize them for their role, such as their shape, pole spacing and frequency response. I doubt Leo Fender did anything other than modify his existing single coil pickup design to work with an instrument with four strings. Only later were his designs refined to offer performance more suited to bass.

I have a Bill Lawrence USA XL500 in my Bronco bass and surprisingly it is a very good bass pickup! Rail style pickups may be the most practical for use on a bass since string spacing isn't a problem. I have also seen the Dimarzio X2N used.

What timbers? What precisely is the "best output"? What style(s) do you play?

Technically, the split coil Fender Precision Bass pickup is a hum-cancelling design. A Jazz Bass Stack is a humbucker. I digress.

From the SD/Basslines range, the Passive Phase II would be nice, especially with the STC-3p pre-amp circuitry. I'd suggest either the SSB-4 or SSB-5 pickup ONLY you haven't even mentioned how many strings your instrument has.
