some say its the Dimarzio SD and PAF Pro. some say it was the Duncan Distortion.... but the Rhoads model Jackson sell nowadays are equipped with JB's and Jazz's... so what did he really use to get that tone?

Zakk Wylde's tribute V has what he claims Randy used, a Distortion/Jazz combo. I can personally vouch for these pickups, while I hated RR's tone, loved his playing, these pickups kick major ass!

Re: What kind of pups did Randy Rhoads use in the early days?

Les Paul: stock
Flying V: Both SD Distortions & Dimarzio S.Dist.
Neck of Vs & Jacksons: Jazz

His LP and Strat were stock, the black polka dot V had Dimarzios, the models changed a few times but he did prefer a Super Distortion in the bridge, the white and the black 3/4 Jackson V's BOTH had a Jazz in the neck and a Duncan Distortion in the bridge add to that master volume Marshall heads, marshall cabs with Altec speakers an MXR Distortion +, MXR flanger, MXR stereo chorus, MXR eq (with a MASSIVE boost in the mids), an Echoplex, a Roland space echo, and the hands and heart of a man put on this Earth to play guitar and thats the RR sound!

I believe he used a Strat on one of the first two Quiet Riot albums (before Metal Health).

I saw pics of Randy using a Dean Flying V in Quiet Riot, never a strat.

Randy favored his Les Paul which had stock pickups.

The first heavenjam. Jimi loaned his to Randy because the baggage department screwed up (some things NEVER change). Randy thought it looked a little funny, but being an angel & all, had no trouble playing it upside down like Jimi. Elvis joined them for a gospel tune, the heavenly choir joined them to sing the Orff-esque parts to "Diary of a Madman", and they ended with "Little Wing".

I had a minidisc dub around here somewhere, but I think my wife recorded some talk radio show over it... :smokin:

and sometimes the search function is a bad thing....

and the song that he used a strat on would have been in the studio on the song S.A.T.O.

That has been explained by Kevin Dubrow.
When Randy joined in on a song(while on vacation) with Dubrow
he borrowed a Dean.

And no, a strat was never used with Ozzy.

I use to have an article out of one of the guitar magazines that was an interview w/ Max Norman, the Engineer/Producer for Blizzard and Diary. He was questioned about some of the pix of Randy in the the studio w/ a Strat. His response was that Randy like to lay down as many guitar tracks as possible. He also stated that he mainly used the Strat during Diary of a madman to make some of the tracks more crisp. He also stated that most of the tracks w the strat were left off, but it was left on some tracks and could be heard the most predominantly on SATO.

FWIW, it's been a long dam time since I've read that article. Also if you leave a strat in the bridge position, run it through an MXR, EQ, Crank the mids and Highs, and slam the gain on an amp. The tone is identical to Randys w/ a bit more bite and clarity. I can see how it would be virtually indistinguishable if it were layered w/ several tracks that used humbucker equipped guitars.

I hate to be a pest and bring up this old thread but I knew I had seen a pic of Randy playing a Strat and it was bugging the crap out of me. I don`t know if he`s in the studio with Ozzy or QR in this pic. Sorry I don`t have a scanner so I just had to take a pic of the magazine it was in.
