what kind of soldering irons do you guys use?

Re: what kind of soldering irons do you guys use?

Aceman, Like minds think alike even when it comes to the Radio Shack 20/40
soldering iron. I have that one too and I use what I think is .32 solder, not
too thin and not so thick.

Well, we obviously have impecable taste in music. Our avatars are out of this world. Clearly our taste in pups is beyond questioning. Why wouldn't we use the same irons. Now - if everyone would just get with th program. :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

I was talking about Frehley, Theodie, but if you are using the same iron I'm going out shopping for something else tomorrow!!!!!

Got a 25/40 watt from radio shack. Cheap and works great plus flexible wattage. It was more than 2 bucks, but less than 20 I'm pretty sure...

I have this soldering iron and I love it...BUT DON'T BUY IT!!!

I went to buy a new tip today and they've discontinued them...sucks.

I have a cheap 30W soldering iron... works.

I like having the 20 watt/40 watt capabilities...30 watts sounds like a nice middle of the road iron though.

I ended up buying one 25 watt and one 40 watt. The 40 watt is great for grounding to the pots. 20/25 watts is great for lugs.

Here is my daily use 50 watt iron that I have really grown to enjoy using:

For $80, it is fantastic! For pickup installs, it may be overkill, but I am sold on this unit if I ever get around to using something better than than my pissy/cheap Radio Shack iron at home. The Hakko has a narrow handle, so it doesn't feel "clunky", and the distance from the fingers to the tip of the iron is ideal for quick/accurate work. Plus, it heats up rapidly, and recovers quickly as any good solder station should. I read it is 50 watts, but you can dial the power down to the point lead barely melts if desired.

The heat accuracy of this unit is fantastic. Units of this variety have four conductors within the wire harness between the solder station's base and solder tip. The reason for this is there is a thermistor or other device inside the metal shaft, so it provides an active "feedback loop" for very accurate temperature control.

30 watts... not enough for anything bigger than a small club :laugh2:

No love for cold heat? :D I actually tried one of those things (didn't buy it)... it's good for when you want a spattering of useless bits of solder on something. I was suprised it even sparked

I use a Radio Shack iron, but I can't recall offhand whether it's 40 watts or less. I bought a battery powered Weller, about the same size as the cold heat thing, but it really only has enough power for soldering to lugs -- definitely not hot enough to deal with the back of a pot.
