What kind of sound is a JB good for?

Hi, i'm looking into getting a Duncan JB for my Les Paul. I play a JCM800 2203 through a Marshall Greenback Cab. The sound i'm going for is punk-rock, pop rock or retro rock (not classic rock :burnout: ). I also have another guitar equipped with a 59 style 8k PAF, so i have that base covered already. I dont play metal of any kind, i love my mids dialed in well. What scares me a little about the JB is the heavy usage of it in the 80s, which sound i absolutely hate more than anything :saeek: Will the JB deliver a good typical LP tone? Looking at the other higher output Duncan pickups, by specs and example mp3s, they look more like typical highgain metal pickups to me. Any suggestions?

Just kidding, while I'm not a fan of the JB, a lot of people really like it in a Les Paul. It's pretty versatile so don't let the 80's metal usage of the pickup deter you.

Don't forget about the Custom series. They're a bit hotter than a PAF type pickup, but not too overpowering.

Jerry cantrell was big on using a JB, and he had one sick tone in AIC, He was big on JCM800 styled amps like bogner, so you might be in the same territory. Does anyone which song that he does realy shows the tone of the JB? If it could do Them bones Rhythem and Lead tones, I might have to go out and buy one!

I am not a fan of it at all!! Have you noticed that whatever sound someone is looking for, there is always the same 4 people or so that say, JB. I Personally think that it is versatile, (It does alot of stuff but none of them really well in my opinion.)

the JB is THE punk rock pickup IMO and it does modern metal very well also and 80s metal too...i'm a big fan of it in a mahogany guitar...it's too bright in anything else but in mahogany it has a nice low end to it and a good edge for lead work but not overly bright. it seems that most people who don't like the JB used it in alder or ash body bolt on guitars with maple necks which can make it sound too bit thin and a bit harsh IMO. to me that pickup is ment for a les paul or similar all mahogany guitar so i tink it will be great for what you want in your paul.

as for the same 4 people and the JB...i only answer JB when someone wants a punk sound for the most part

I've got a JB fitted in my Gibson les paul classic - I didn't want the ceramic 'rock' pickups.

I gotta say I think it's the best all round pickup out there.

I got a friend who plays punk & he loved my guitar so much he went out and bought an epiphone lp standard and whipped in some Sd's (invader in the neck!!!! & a JB in the bridge)

I do have some wierd friends!!!! :blackeye: :smack:

It should sound pretty good to you. A JB is probably the most versitile pickup. It can cover anything all the way up to metal, it's a great pickup.

Billy Joe Armstrong ( Fernandes Strat Copy with JB Bridge. Style: Punk Rock )

Adam Jones ( Late 70's LP Custom Silverburst with JB Bridge. Style: Progressive Metal )

I used these big name bands as an example of different genres of style of music using the same exact JB model pickup on their guitars. And non of them sound like 80's metal. Hmm....I wonder why? Maybe because the JB is one of the most versatile pickup in the world that can do just about any style of music you can think of. The JB will sound what you want it to sound like. Really, it's all up to the player. Don't blame the pickup just because your sound sucks. Believe me, it's not the pickup.

That's what i thought, but i never played a JB myself, so i wanted to hear about it from someone who already has hands on experience with the JB.

split it and you can play country with it! put it in paralel and it gets a tele type of vibe. put it in series and grind it up for any type of sound you can imagine.

but i think the C5 would suit you better.
