i usually use 22 stranded but it think i might switch to a vintage cloth wire next time.

I like to use shielded wire. Probably 24 gauge as Tone4Days mentions.
Handy to have the ground wire go along with the inner conductor (less wires to mess with also) and the shielding cuts down on the conductors picking up interference.
The total diameter of the wire can be a bit bulky, but haven't found this to be a huge issue.
