What lighter? Alder or Ash?

Swamp ash is lighter than alder. Northern ash will be heavier than alder.

It depends. I have a very light swamp ash Tele and a very light alder Tele, but I also have a heavy swamp ash Tele and moderate weight alder and swamp ash Teles. Swamp ash is lighter than northern ash on average, and I suspect that alder falls in between but closer to swamp ash on average. I also suspect that alder weight is less variable than swamp ash weight.

It's fair to say Alder is more consistant in weight. Ash varys by region.
Northern , Southern or swamp ( as it's known in guitar circles) Try walking
into a wood supply shop and ask for a piece of Swamp Ash... They will look
at you like your crazy :13: Some parts vendors such as Musikraft list their
wood as ultra lite Ash. But I still think the term Swamp Ash sounds cooler!!
