SD should thank Ibanez for making louzy stock pickups!
I actually heard about Dimarzio first but reading more into pickups I found that all the great tones I liked were mainly SD users.
After consulting the forum guys here I got a JB.

my first axe was a BC Rich Warlock, and I started listening to non-death-thrash music shortly after I got bored "chuggachugga"ing all the time. I noticed Kurt Cobain and Billie-Joe Armstrong and Rivers Cuomo (heros of mine at the time) all played Strats so I saved up and got my California Strat and while i loved the clean sounds, I wanted it to be able to 'chug' too when i wanted to.

So it turns out K.C. and B.J.A. both had Seymour Duncan JBs in their Strats so I knew that was the brand I needed...tried a Hot Rails 'cuz it sounded more my style...I eventually built the Warmoth just so i could get more flavors of SD 'buckers heh heh

My first SD was a QP P-bass pickup, I bought for a replacement for a MIJ P-bass I had picked up in Japan, it sounded great! I have tried alot of different pickups (I used to manage a music store) and SD's consistently work for the sound I'm looking for.

After playing a Lonestar Strat with a Pearly Gates Plus in the bridge, I ordered a catalog. It basically snowballed from there.

I wonder how many other people were introduced to SD through their OEM stuff.

Cobain and Billie Joe had JBs in those strats? I like the sound of Cobain's guitar on "Serve the Servants" and Billie Joe's on "Brain Stew".

i was making my plans for a warmoth strat, and started to research pups to put into it. i stumbled across this forum and realized how sweet it was to be able to find out so much info from actual users of the products. i figured that a fanbase this deticated must be here for a reason. so i out a duncan in the bridge of my strat and havnt regreted it since.

i saw on the megadeth website that mustaine uses the JB, so i became interested. strangely enough, i didnt even get a JB until 3 years of posting here and 4 other aftermarket pickups :laugh2:

I didn't want to put a battery in my guitar to play EMG; I didn't know they made passives, however. There went that idea.
I used to think DiMarzio only made the Super Distortion in Double Cream. I didn't want that in my SG Gothic.
I then went to Duncan becuase the invader looked so cool. And then I heard Dimebag had a new pickup on the market, and I got one to the quickness!

I was wanting to experiment with my sound, and I wanted vintage-y stuff, not modern. 15 years of guitar magazines had sort of implanted Seymour's name in my head, and he was just the first place Looked. And last, for that matter. :>

Lack of DiMarzios. I wanted a Super Distortion but the store didn't have them so I got a DD (and CR) instead. Now, being influenced by many SD-advocates, I'm fairly certain that I will try out more SD pickups before trying other companies' pickups


This forum is great for the user, and reflects well upon the company. Very positive feature.

I first got into aftermarket pickups due to the crappy bridge pickup in my ibanez AX.

Went with dimarzio for a while...tried a few different pickups. I started off with the FRED cause satch was using it. Went through the chopper, breed, and drop-sonic, and didn't really much care for any of 'em. Just kept on going back to the FRED.

After that, I read a few things about duncan pickups...decided to pick up a JB off of ebay for real cheap, about 40 dollars or so. Put it in my kramer focus 1000 that I had at the time and absolutely hated it. I was ready to give up on duncans, but I went on harmony central, and read reviews for the JB. The people that didn't like it for the same reasons that I didn't said that they liked the custom a bit more.

So, I took another stab at it. Bought a custom on Ebay...didn't know what guitar to put it in...so I "temporarily" used it to replace the 500T in my main guitar, my Gibson les paul studio lite. "temporarily" became permanent. Suddenly my LP was freakin alive. I attended UGD, bought a couple of other SD pickups in santa barbara.

And then the SD's just kept on pouring in . Now, out of my collection of 9 electric guitars, only 2 of 'em don't have a seymour duncan pickup in 'em. Eventually ended up aquiring a taste for the JB too. So...hey, thats a long story.

Well, it was back in 1982 and I had a cheap JCPenney LP copy. I subscribed to GP magazine and I needed a new bridge pickup. I really needed a real guitar but one thing at a time. I saw all the ads and Seymour's impressed me the most. They weren't all flash. There was a lot of genuine substance in them. I went to my local music store and asked for the hottest Duncan they had. They gave me a JB. It made the guitar usable...

I used to play pretty aggressivly on my Black MIJ strat and actually broke the stock neck pickup which I wasn't too happy with anyways. So I put a set of SSL1's in there. They were so much better... that is until I broke them too.
I now have them in most of my guitars with the exception of my 335 copy and my new PRS SE Soapbar.
Those will probably get the change when I can afford it too.
I just loved the complexity and for lack of a better adjective.... QUALITY of tone the SSL1's provided.
I can't imagine installing anything other than SD.
I've always been happy with the results.
With the possible exception of the JBJr... but the jury is still out on that one.

I have a '65 Mustang which had a bridge pup that died a few years ago. I brought in the guitar to a music shop to get it fixed and the luthier I spoke to recommended a JB Jr.

My first aftermarket pickups were EMGs in my Ibanez. I wanted to change the pickups in my strat copy just for kicks (I was young and really inexperienced in tone shaping – not that I’m an expert now, but oh well). George Lynch was my favorite guitar player at the time (and basically still is) so I went with the Screamin’ Demon primarily for the name. My friend also had an ESP Skulls n Snakes with the demon, so I had already had an opportunity to play one. It’s been my favorite pickup ever since.

That white SH-12 is still in my strat copy. It was my first of approximately 15 Duncan purchases.
