What made you want to try SD pups the FIRST time?

Re: What made you want to try SD pups the FIRST time?

Reccomendation from a guy at the local guitar store.

To be honest, i was looking at dimarzios, but SD's are easier for me to find around Toronto.

Distribution.

Re: What made you want to try SD pups the FIRST time?

15 years ago I wanted to try something other than Dimarzio and EMG ;)

Re: What made you want to try SD pups the FIRST time?

so far it seems more went to SD out of neccessity/availability...interesting... :)

Re: What made you want to try SD pups the FIRST time?

I remember my guitar instructor from about 12 years ago talking them up. He was really "picky" about tone and gear, so SD was the first name in pickups as far as I was concerned. I have tried several others before, but these Duncan's have really delivered. Oh yeah, the diversity of pickups and the great web site with audio samples was a huge benefit.

Re: What made you want to try SD pups the FIRST time?

i was a dimarzio user when i started playing 16 yrs ago. i was into metal then. found them to be a tad inorganic and generic. almost like a pickup without character and soul.

next up is emg. pretty happy with the results until i grew out of metal.

i've been a happy camper and a sd user ever since i tried them almost ten years ago but kept telling myself i should give dimarzio another chance.

Re: What made you want to try SD pups the FIRST time?

I guess my experience is the reverse of most people here...

I have been very happy with the DiMarzios I have tried (Air Classic / Super Distortion / HS3 / YJM ), but thought that I should give SD pickups a try because they are so popular.

Once I got my Schecter C-1 Classic (came with JB and 59 stock), I knew I really like these 2 pickups... that led me to this forum, and to trying the CC. I am still not quite certain about the CC... but I would like to try other SD pickups.

I have also tried EMG... and I think that all 3 companies (SD / DiMarzio / EMG) offer quality products, it's just whatever suits your desired application.

I have a guitar in the shop now getting a fret job and 3 pickups (YJM / YJM / JB) installed.... can't wait to get it back and see how they co-exist :D

I wonder if there's someone here you went SD first, got dissatisfied, then went for other mfrs after?

Re: What made you want to try SD pups the FIRST time?

Around 1984 I was bitching about the thin crappy sound in the bridge position of my Strat. Actually, at that point I had been bitching about that for a couple of years. Now, I was aware of the DM FS-1, but it just didn't sound like a great solution, probably because the guys who were recomending it were fairly clean players. Then someone suggested the Quarter Pounder, and that was a real eye opener! Nice rockin' sound in a single coil space.

Re: What made you want to try SD pups the FIRST time?

My first guitar teacher recommended them to me as an upgrade to the crappy pick ups I had in my first guitar. I never looked back....

Re: What made you want to try SD pups the FIRST time?

I had (still have it, actually) an old Epiphone strat that had the most awful, bright, ear-killing bridge pickup in it. After a lot of discontent with it, I finally started talking to Luke (Duke) about replacing it. He recommended a single coil sized humbucker so I could keep the pickguard and save a little money. Guitar Sinner had a JB Jr in stock so I picked it up. I've never turned back.

Re: What made you want to try SD pups the FIRST time?

- Step 1 - I bought a used Fernandes strat that had APS-1's installed by its previous owner. I liked the guitar and liked the pickups.

- Step 2 - The bridge pickup (a D*M@#&+%) of my '66 SG died. A few months before Guitar Player magazine published its "52 Pickups" article, which raved about SD's Antiquity humbuckers. I bought them for the SG and they sounded like a little piece of heaven. Since then I'm hooked!

Re: What made you want to try SD pups the FIRST time?

I heard about them forever thru ads and endorsements. I owned a SD Convertible I got for 50 bucks, so I knew the company was great. What sold me was that I played a Hamer Studio thru a Marshall and said, wow these things have the classic tone. Duncan has a recipe that is all its own, very basic, dry and to the point - old school.
