Look at the picture of the neck, see the grain is almost "checkered" like?? I have this on my mexi-strat like this too (only on one side) and I was just curious.

(by the way, I was lookin at my mexi strats neck, and when you hae the guitar upside down, the left of the skunk stripe has a perfect grain, and on the right its perfect except 2 ugly dark streaks and the checkered stuff near the fretboard....the 2 dark streaks piss me off cause I see them alot when I play.. aw well, just venting).

That is from the cut running parallel to the grain. It happen on almost all maple necks. It's nothing out of the ordinary.
