What mic for live recording

I have a five piece rock band. I also have the zoom ps-04 palmtop recorder. It has one input, and a line input. I want to record the band during band practices. What kind of mic should I use? right now I am interested in a dynamic mic (i have no phantom power). I am also on a small budget. I know that it is best to record with two mics but my recorder only has one input.

Shure SM57, If you can get a small mixer you could then mic all the instruments. Some rehearsal studios will record your practice sessions.

My band just picked up a Carvin CM-87S condenser mic for recording. A little pricey at $199 but well worth it, it comes with it's own phantom power box. It is WORTH the extra cash for a good condenser, sounds amazing, with a lot of detail. We set it in the middle of our practise room and everything sounds good and balanced.

Do you mean I could use only one sm57 for the whole band? I do have an sm57.

57 will not be good for a room mic, it is not what it is designed for. It is a mic I don't even care to use anymore, it just leaves too much of the tone out IMO.. Two PZMs on both sides of the room should do the the trick very naturally and very nicely. If you can find a pair of old Radio Shack PZMs ( realistic) and change them to XLR inputs, you will have one of the best bang for the buck mic pairs out there. Spend a few bucks on some mastering and you can have some very solid live tracks. Hit my link and check out my tunes posted. I have several live tracks I did with a PZM pair, into a 4 channel mixer, into an MP3 recorder. I am very happy with the results. It was just some rehearsal messing....

Yah, but did I mention that My recorder only has one input. so I Can only use one mic. I want to try my recorder first before I think about an other recorder.

Pick up a cheap mixer, 4 input. Run the mics through that, into your recorder. Very simple stuff.
