What mixes well with an Iommi p'up?

So i have a gibby Iommi p'up in the bridge of my epi Flying V and right now i have the stock p'up in the neck and they really dont mix well as the Iommi is approx. 7 million times more aggressive sounding.

So what mixes well with an Iommi pickup that hopefully comes in gold, or black?

do the iommi's come in a calibrated set? if not it cant hurt to have two, thats his setup at least. unless youre going for a smoother sounding neck

Re: What mixes well with an Iommi p'up?

I think they make an Iommi neck pickup. All of his sig models have 2 similar looking pickups.

Re: What mixes well with an Iommi p'up?

I just checked around and I don't see anything about a neck model. Got any specs on the Iommi? That would help us help you find a good neck pickup to match it. I do know you can get the solid black covers to make them match in looks.

Re: What mixes well with an Iommi p'up?

I actually like the Gibson Tony Iommi Signature pickup as a pair for an SG body (in my Epi Iommi G-400), and in my Epi LP...But...the middle position in my Epi LP sounds "boing-y" and hollow, with both pickups selected.

I really don't find the output of any of the four Gibson Iommi's I have, to be any louder than the middle HOT, or, upper end of MEDIUM on the "output scale". The pickup "output chart" at Gibson is a darn lie.

I don't know what pickup might mix with a Gibson Iommi, since I have only used them in pairs. I will say that the stock Epi neck pickup is likely to be so awful under gain (metal attitude), that anything else would probably be an improvement.

Re: What mixes well with an Iommi p'up?

BTW, there is NO difference between the Iommi's. There are not neck models, although they can be used for neck pickups.

Truth be known, Tony says he rarely uses the neck pickup anyways!!!

The Gibson Iommi was available in gold, chrome, and black. The gold finish was dropped over 2 years ago...leaving black or chrome as the the only current options.

Get a Jazz Bridge Model, and be prepared to enjoy your neck pickup more than ever before.

Nice info, to expand, this would tell me and you that the Iommi's (I could be wrong but in all logic) can't be too high in output or else the neck would sound like poo, (if the PU was high output and the neck and bridge are the same).

Point: any nicer sounding PAFish neck PU sould be a great match.

I honestly dont know what the iommi is wound to, but according to gibsons pickup guide it has just a ittle less output than the Dirty Fingers. It does have an Alnico 2 and ceramic magnet in it if that helps.

Im not extremly impressed with the newer epi "Hot" pickups. I do have an Epi LP standard
from circa 2000 that still has the stock pickups that i really like, but ive never ran into another epi that sounds like it and ive literally played 100 different ones.

Basically the problem i have with the stock neck hb is its muddy and not nearly aggressive enough. Using that what would you recommend?

Interesting, its not too bassy or overpowering?

Three of my Iommis run 14K, and one runs 10% more @15.5 K (if my memory serves).

I have a set of original Dirty Fingers sitting on a shelf. The D/F's and Iommi's are very different.

Both are modern sounding, but Dirty Fingers are wild, with all kinds of roars/squeeks/grinds/harmonics popping out out of them. The Gibson Iommi is forward thrusting, cutting, and concentrated.

If the Dirty Fingers were a weapon, it would be a Knuckle Duster!

If the Gibson Tony Iommi were a weapon, it would be a Fairburn-Sykes British Commando knife!

:headbang:

Perhaps the 'Joneser is correct. A thinner sounding, cleaner toned, less "roundy" pickup would match well with the Iommi. I have no actual experience with the Jazz models.

Hmm, what about a hb sized p-90, say a PhatCat or one of the GFS ones?

I found a neck humbucker that is not muddy,on the contrary bright but not thin, and pretty aggressive enough for you.Its name is DiMarzio D Activator Neck and it also comes in Gold Tops..
