What neck pickups work well with a C5?

Re: What neck pickups work well with a C5?

The pickups I've used in my Hamer Special FM were Distortion/Pearly Gates, PG/PG, Rio BBQ/Genuine Texas, 59/59, and APH-1b/Seth. The APH-1/Seth is what's in it now, and it sounds really good, very warm and smooth. Next I'm going to drop the Brobucker in the bridge with the Seth in the neck. My impressions of the pickups:

The Distortion bridge just wasn't right for this guitar. It sounded good, but not as good as in some of my other guitars.

The Pearly Gates set worked very well. They had a little too much sizzle for my taste, but they cut through the mix in a live situation very well. I'm actually thinking of giving them another try later on and working more with my eq to really try to dial in the right tone.

The Rios weren't all that different from the Pearly Gates. The Genuine Texas was very similar to the PGn to my ears. The BBQ was like a cross between a JB and a PG.

The 59's worked very well in this guitar. I figured if they were good enough for the current Hamer Studios, they were good enough for my Special FM. They were extremely versatile and can do almost anything with the right amp pushing them. I ended up taking them out and throwing them in another guitar because I wanted to try something a little smoother with a touch more midrange.

Right now I've got an APH-1 bridge and a Seth neck in it. The Hamer is very smooth and has an amazing balance of lows, mids and highs. The lows from the mahogany, highs from the maple top and mids from the A2 pickups really mesh well. I might be perfectly happy with this setup except that I have a zebra bridge and nickel neck pickup. I'm going to try the Brobucker matched with the Seth neck next.

I've also been thinking about a set of the Anniversary Seths in this guitar. Which I think would sound absolutely fantastic.

Pearly Gates is a great choice.

AND if you dont like it you can always do a magnet swap. The Pearly gates + is pretty cool in the neck.

I had PGs in my old Schecter and really dug them, however they were a little edgy and I want something a little smoother in this axe. That said, that guitar did have a maple neck I believe, which would definitely sound different than the mahogany neck of the Hamer. I may eventually try a PG set in this axe too...

I paired my C5 with a PGn, as well. It is a very good choice...many great tones available with this pair.

I would like to try the C5 with an A5 neck pickup in the future, but I'm holding off b/c the PGn/C5b covers so much ground.
