I have the same prob like Nightburst. Searching for a neck PU matches the JB in my RG 550. I think Jazz or Full Shred would do it fine... 59" could have to much bass. But maybe i want something hotter. Hot clear and bright which cuts and screams and has great harmonics. Could be louder than the bridge but shouldn't have to much bass.
Don't care much about cleans at the moment.

Yeah funny how the pickup lowes itself in time. Maybe our punk way of playing is just to much for the pickup and it tries to retreat :D.

How would the Jazz compare to the '59? Does it have the ability to growl too? I hear some mixed reviews about the Jazz.
And the PG comes looking around the corner again too.
Man I'm so confused now, don't know what to think. I'll have a look at the tone chart again...

The Air Norton is a very good match for the JB.

10 year old thread...

Personally I'd go with the Alnico II Pro. I think the EQ is a much better match.

I just installed a Jazz neck in a Les Paul with a Screamin Demon in the bridge. I am real happy with both Pups.

In the Neck the Jazz does not muddy up. It almost has a single coil spank to it. It gets a hollow type sound. Think Nuno type neck tones here!
The '59 great pup but not the strongest for neck soloing.
the PGn is better for neck soloing in my opinion, a bit flappy low end on chordal work. the Jazz stays tighter for that.

I like the Jazz for both cords and soloing. My favorite neck pup so far. I got all three in necks of Les Pauls, so this is my view from that stance. Remember LP, short scale, thick tone. All three pups are nice with clean tone, but I think the standout on high gain is the Jazz. Runner up PGn. PGn roll back the tone a bit and you are in Dickey Betts/ Warren Haynes territory.

WOW 10 Year old thread. And for once I am happy to see an old thread bumped. My choice and opinion have changed, so much.... I read my previous comment in 2004.
I now recommend the JAZZ(N) and not the 59(N). The Jazz is perfectly matched with the JB.

don't leave out the alnico 2 pro...!?!?!

+1 and also the PG and if you want a little extra output use the bridge models. A neck pickup always needs to be significantly weaker than the bridge pickup if you want an output balance as the string rotation at the neck is so much greater. That will always make any pickup much louder at the neck than the same pickup will be at the bridge. I love the round "woman tone" of a good A2 PAF style bucker in the neck with that heat and singing mid tone of a JB in the bridge.

The alnico2pro B is great in the neck of a superstrat (charvel style) with a JB in the bridge (or a jb/superdistortion alnico5 hybrid...). I also love the screaming demon in the neck. man man man that pickup just kills it.

I would highly recommend that 59n. You have to remember that the neck pickup is usually directly under the fundamental on the string. So you don't need a super hot pickup in that position. It's the loudest point on the string. If you adjust your pickup heights correctly, both pickups will be the same volume. I prefer the gustiness of the 59n for solos. The Jazz would be my second choice.
