What neck single coil to pair with SH-6

I'm making a custom Ibanez RG with chambered mahogany back and a quilted maple top similar to this one:

I just want my cream/black SH-6 in the bridge, but I was thinking of a single coil in the neck, ala George Lynch or a Hamer Californian. The only single coil I've used is a Virtual Vintage Blues for a neck pickup, which is great, but a little weak to pair with an SH-6. I have it paired with a Vintage Rails which is a good match. I also tried a Hot Rails, but it didn't click for me.

I'm looking to get as much of the Strat pop tone as possible with the single coil in clean or overdrive, while still being able to have a sweet lead distortion tone that can match the SH-6.

If you want a true single coil to match up with the Distortion, you'll want something hotter like an SSL-3 Hot, SSL-4 Quarter Pound or an SSL-5 Custom. Just remember that along with a true single coil, comes true single coil hum.

Also the route you make for the guitar will dictate what pickup you get. Some have the triangular lip and some do not. If you route the guitar to accomidate the lip, then you can use whatever you want. If you do a plain oval route, you'll be limited.

I can't add much to what Travis said, but one of my favorite "single-coil" tones, is the sound of the Distortion (neck) split. Having a pair of Distortions, with the ability to split them, could be a very cool axe.

(I think it was Travis that turned me on to that.)

In fact, I don't know how many people I've turned on to the Distortion. But it is plentiful. And it is good. I am pleased.

it's not quite single coil, but close to the sound you're looking for. My favorite pair with the Distortion is a cool rail in the neck.

I thought of the Cool Rails, or a Dimarzio Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues. I may take Travis up on the offer for the other.
