What of this Dimarzio's pickups choose?

Re: What of this Dimarzio's pickups choose?

Re: What of this Dimarzio's pickups choose?

Not that I respect your opinion, but I was comparing tone zone with my pickups list(like Super distortion 1, d activator, gravity, etc) :)

Sorry if I write wrong, How I say, i dont speak english very well

Look, you're using a solid state amp and the amp you want to get is a solid state amp. Your choice of pickups is a bit wider than if you use a tube amp in my opinion because tube amps are much more sensitive to pickups, wood, etc... The Tone Zone, Gravity Storm and Breed are much more suited for versatile styles so they are probably not a good choice for you.

I suggested the D-Sonic because it's a strong pickup but fairly versatile. I also suggested the Evolution II because it has a nice low midrange and bass and is not as harsh as the Evolution. The Dominion is a great pickup but I've only played it one time and it is a very mid-heavy pickup that seems to work well with Mesa Boogies which have a natural mid scoop and big low end. You can scratch the Dual Sound off of your list because it's just a Super Distortion with splitting/parallel options which you don't need because you're not looking for clean and intermediate gain sounds. I'm not a big fan of the Steve's Special. I had one for a short time and sent it back to Dimarzio to exchange for another pickup. In a way it's a very good pickup, but it makes me want more mids. The D Activator has a really cool sound. I like it a lot but is too hot for my uses. It could make a good choice for you but keep in mind that it's a bit bright, but that helps it with clarity and harmonics.

If it is a choice from only your list, then the best choices seem to be:

1. D Activator
2. Super Distortion
3. Dominion
4. Tone Zone

If it is a choice between the available Dimarzios then my suggestion might look like this:

1. Evolution 2
2. Crunch Lab or D-Sonic
3. D Activator

I recorded the D-Sonic a while back and this is how it sounded:

Around the same time, I recorded the Super Distortion and this is how it sounded:

I recorded this little demo with a Tone Zone:

Re: What of this Dimarzio's pickups choose?

Because the only Seymour duncan that i liked are: Duncan distortion, alternativa 8 and the comments says thats pickups no fit in a basswood guitar, but I don't discard that options, but first i choosing the dimarzio that i like, and after the sd that i like and after make a comparison :),

Thats fair

I love the Super D in basswood for what u want

And the Duncan Custom in basswood for what u want.

The Custom has slightly less mids naturally but more highs

Both are thick and punchy and amazing bridge lead guitar sounds

I say this way too often about both pickups, but its the truth

Re: What of this Dimarzio's pickups choose?

Dont rule out the Duncan Distortion

No, but first i want to choose a dimarzio and then make a comparison with the duncan custom or duncan distortion

Talking about dimarzio's, i am between
Super distortion 1 dp100
D activator bridge dp220
Tone zone dp155
dominion bridge
The breed

i think the decision is between d activator and sd dp100, what do you think about breed, tone zone and dominion?

Re: What of this Dimarzio's pickups choose?

Well, if you chose "airnorton" as moniker, I guess to try to get you to listen 'bout the qualities of Duncan products is just an excercise in futility...

Futility? what does mean? i don't speak english very well

The breed

The Tone Zone and Breed are the most versatile and (arguably) toneful on your list. They both have alnico 5 magnets. The Tone Zone has deep lows and low midrange, presence in the treble frequencies, and the feel is not loose and not real tight. The Breed has a little bit less lows and low mids, more upper mids, brighter overall, and it feels slightly looser than the Tone Zone. Both pickups can get a little muddy with high gain because of their massive midrange, so you have to scoop the mids on your amp a little bit or use an EQ to get more clarity for heavy chording.

The Super Distortion is the 2nd most versatile, is hotter than both the Tone Zone and Breed, but has a similar thickness in the mids and lows. It's a bit darker than the Tone Zone. In my experience, it doesn't necessarily get muddy, but it can lack a bit of definition for heavy distortion because it's a bit dark and has a thick midrange. That's why I suggested the D-Sonic because it's warm like the Super Distortion, but more clarity, presence, and not so much output.

The D Activator probably has the coolest overall metal sound because it emulates active pickups. I have never used a passive pickup that could get that kind of crunch and harmonics without sounding too over-the-top. To me, the Duncan Distortion is a bit over-the-top and the D Activator is just short of sounding like that in my opinion. The Duncan Distortion is slightly brighter than the D Activator, but the D Activator seems to have a similar presence. The D Activator is more articulate than the Duncan Distortion and has a more characteristic sound. The Duncan Distortion has slightly more low end, but they both seem to have a thick midrange. Neither of them sound scooped at all. You will get more dynamics with the D Activator which seems to clean up better with the volume control and softer picking, but I think the Activator might be a bit hotter than the Duncan Distortion.

I can't tell you a whole lot about the Dominion because I have only played it once. It's similar in a way to the D Activator because it has a lot of clarity even though it has noticeably more midrange than the D Activator. I think maybe in a slight way the Dominion is more organic than the D Activator. It's still a thrash pickup though.

It sounds like you need a D Activator. Why don't you just go buy one? Dimarzio has a 14 day exchange policy so if you don't like it then they'll let you choose another pickup instead.

Re: What of this Dimarzio's pickups choose?

Seymour Duncan Distortion WILL work in a basswood body guitar my friend.

La distorsión trabajará en Tilo Cuerpo

A distorção vai trabalhar no corpo de basswood

Re: What of this Dimarzio's pickups choose?

I have a Tone Zone in my Ibanez Destroyer, and I notice that it has some high end, a wide bottom end, and less mids. I find myself cranking the mids with this pick-up. Although, my Ibanez is made of solid mahogany, so it's naturally going to sound thicker and meatier, but I think the Tone Zone would be a good choice. It is more than capable of achieving the sounds you want, especially if you play heavy music.

I recommend a Duncan Distortion also if you are considering Seymour Duncan too. It's going to have more mids and a tighter bottom end, which will be great for the music you want to play. I also recommend the JB as well, because many players in your style use the JB, including myself (Placed in a Basswood bodied guitar).

Yes, i tkink the deal is between Super d 1, and the d activator, the problem is, the only couple that has the D activator is the D activator Neck, and that doesnt convince me, i think the super distortion has more couples, well, thanks, you help me very very much, from here go alone. thanks :)

Re: What of this Dimarzio's pickups choose?

Hello, first, im not speak english very well, So, if you speak in simple words, i just be great
I wanna change my bridge pickup, from mi dean custom 350 floyd, is from basswood, so, i am betwen this...

D activator bridge dp220 6/6/6.5 470
Dual Sound dp101 8/7.5/5.5 425
Super distortion 1 dp100 8/7.5/5.5 425
Steve's special dp161 7.5/4.5/6.5 390
The Breed dp166 8/9/6.5 356
Gravity Storm dp253 7.5/9/4.5 340
Dominion bridge dp245 7/9/6 360
Tone Zone dp155 8.5/8.5/5 375
Bass/Middle/Treble Output

So... I definitly would like to help me at least to discard some of this pickups, to do the list smaller than it is
For the eq, the output and comments I think the betters are:

-Super distortion 1 DP100
-D activator bridge DP220
-Steve's Special DP161
-Gravity Storm DP253
and The Tone Zone DP165

Please help me

Hi there AirNorton

Of all the DiMarzio pick ups you've mentioned, i like the Gravity Storms the best - for your applications (...if you only go on the black & white specs sheet)

Re: What of this Dimarzio's pickups choose?

Do these charts come with certain p/u's, or where can I get these charts?

BTW to the OP, my vote is for the Super Distortion DP100.......it kicks major!

DiMarzio does not currently have print catalogs. They are old catalogs. Steve Blucher sent them for me long time ago (+- 1987).
I have a DP100 on my Gibson Les Paul (bridge position) and its sound is great. It is much better than original 498T in my opinion. In neck position I use an Air Norton. Very good pup too. But I would like see a Double Whammy in this position because its middle frequency. I think the neck pickups should have much middle frequency, this way they can producean open sound with harmonics too.
