What pedal for a jcm 800 tone.

I was wondering about 2 pedals actually whats the best for a hendrix'ish tone, and what pedal works best for a marshall jcm 800 tone. I know there is a hendrix pedal out, but dose it do a good job. And sorry for reposting the numerous marshall pedal questions but i diddnt see one specifically about the 800.

Thanks

thats all extreme mods n stuff, rnt there ne that do it right off the bat, or with very minor mods

The Fulltone OCD sounds sort of like the preamp section on a Marshall added to whatever amp you use, so that get's my vote. I haven't tried a Carl Martin Plexitone yet, but that might add the right flavor too. You'll be better off spending the money for one of those 2, because anytime I've tried to go cheaper, like the Marshall pedals for instance, I've wished I'd saved my money for something better.

Re: What pedal for a jcm 800 tone.

Carl Martin Plexitone has my vote as it was basically designed to be used with Marshall amps (I haven't tried it with any of my Fender amps yet but it sounds superb with my Marshall), and I feel the same way Gearjoneser does in regards to buying a lower-priced pedal while trying to get the high-quality sound you're looking for. You can go through a lot of pedals and pay a lot of shipping when you could've just saved up a few more coins in the first place and bought the pedal that actually provides the color for whichever sound you want. And so it came to be when I broke my own pattern recently and bought the Plexitone. Without a doubt worth every penny I paid for it, as it's quality far surpasses anything under $100 and puts it right at the top of the heap in company with all the other great pedals.

Now it's time to look for good buys on a Fulltone Mini Deja Vibe and an ADA Flanger....but that's a different thread....lol
Good luck!!

Oh yeah.... also check out the Radial Tonebone Hot British.

Re: What pedal for a jcm 800 tone.

I'll probably get slammed for this :), but I don't think any pedal out there makes one amp sound like another. Close, yes, but not exactly. Thats not to say that there aren't any good pedals, the OCD for example, but they can inherently do only so much...Just my humble opinion.

Re: What pedal for a jcm 800 tone.

Unless you use it on a specific amp and speakers;)
And the amp is always the foundation, no pedals will ever never sound any better than the amp that powers them!

Re: What pedal for a jcm 800 tone.

I just experienced over the weekend after being a guitar tech on a small stage how ruined a tone can get by using pedals as the main distortion sound. A guitar tech over the weekend (not me) was managing the main stage of this event which had 2 stacks of mesa triple rectifiers, for both guitarists. Trying to make life easier he decided he'd remove the footswitches (channel switches) and just use pedals to avoid confusing guitarists in between setting up for each band.I notcied how crap the tone was, there was no meat or chunk in the overdrive sound, no dynamics just a fizzy buzzy mess. If only they'd just used the amps distortion they would have killer tone, but no...

I suppose using distortion pedals at home for practice is fine at low volumes ( i use a marshall guvnor) which sounds really nice for marshall type sounds but i never use it live because it takes away alot of my amps tone and gets worse at louder volumes. I like boosters that enhance the sound of your amps exisiting tone or add a little drive.

Its like replacing 2 sets of el34's for a small box with some transitors in it.

My 2 cents, dills

Sorry cannot generalise it like that, quite a few get about fantastic tones with amps and pedals.
Some of those channel switchers sounds about worse than most lowerend od/distortions.
Use a good amp, use the right speakers for the job, and most of the time, no matter what you use pedals or the amp itself, it will sound good!

Re: What pedal for a jcm 800 tone.

That was just an experience i had on the weekend, and my take on it sorry...

Re: What pedal for a jcm 800 tone.

No need to be sorry, a Mesa Rectifier is not exactly known to be happy about most pedals;)
Cannot the soundman either, would have been better to actually use the amps:D

Re: What pedal for a jcm 800 tone.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, MI AUDIO CRUNCH BOX!!! Only $110 and it really does sound like a JCM800 about to explode. It blows away anything else out there for high gain.

Cheers,

CJ
