I have a crate VFX5212 (tube amp). It has a clean channel and a distortion channel. My question is about the distortion channel. I love the distortion but i play in a band with another guitarist and I dont have a rhythm or lead channel it is all the same. I want a pedal that will boost my volume and maybe a little gain so I can be louder than the rhythm for solos. I have a SD pickup booster, but it only adds gain when I use it with humbuckers. I also have a boss od/distortion and it doesnt seem to work for that. Does anyone have any ideas of things to try. I would want to be able to adjust the levels.i was looking at the maxon od-9. Would that work?

I've got a crate V series as well, You're doesn't have the boost feature??? That sucks.
When I'm not using the boost feature in my amp to boost my solos I'm using my MXR dyna-comp.

The Pickup Booster should do what you want. Can't you crank it up a little more? It's designed to make single coils sound like humbuckers...should give you a nice boost...mine sure does!

If you have an effects loop, some sort of boosting device might work better there as it would probably boost volume better than before the amp as it's not pushing the preamp tubes harder.

Yes...that or the Boss DS-1 would be a good choice. Although the Duncan Pickup Booster should do the trick too. Lew

Turn your amp's gain down. I like to find the 'sweet spot'...just enough gain to sound gainy without going over the top. That way when you want to go over the top you've got room to do so. I mean if the amp's gain is already on ten, you can't always push it harder with a pedal. you'll just clip the signal more.

I should try one of those thru my JCM 800 oneday.....
Only real volume boost i have ever liked for solos is using multible channel amps.... I find it hard going back to older single channel amps now... i'm spoiled....

I may get an EQ myself. I keep trying out different dist/od pedals and finding none of them beat the sound of the amp on its own. I'm thinking an EQ would be good since I like the amps tone already and can tailor or fine tune it with the additional sliders and gain level.

i personally like it very much. i use it as a headphone amp when my parents yell at me to turn my amp off....lol. it sounds very good, and i can get a lot of amp sounds from it. for the money, its very very good....

Many of the effects mentioned in this thread will color your sound. If that's what you're looking for, great. If you want a clean boost try something like the Bad Bob Booster:
