What pedal would give me some "synth" sounds?

Re: What pedal would give me some "synth" sounds?

Not sure what it's based on, but the Line 6 M13 has such an effect. Played with it for a while when I stumbled across it. By sheer coincidence, my watch alarm started beeping and was coming through my pickups because of how I was holding the guitar while futzing with the M13. Think "intro to VH's version of Dancing In The Street".

Re: What pedal would give me some "synth" sounds?

I think the Superego might be a winner…

Smaller is better.

What did you end up with? Everything in this thread is super fun...

Re: What pedal would give me some "synth" sounds?

A bunch of other random gear! :lmao:

But this thread did point out a LOT of cool boxes!!!!

Re: What pedal would give me some "synth" sounds?

Not trying to be a synth, just want something that will de-guitar my guitar for playing a few synth lines.

It really depends on what you are trying to do. Are you going for big 80's string pads or are you looking to do 70's Arp/MOOG synth runs? Everything mentioned here will pull your guitar out of the guitar realm. It all comes down to what you want as an end game.

Re: What pedal would give me some "synth" sounds?

I can get a synth sound using a combination of rolling the tone back on the guitar and using a wah in an almost open position. I can also skip the wah and get a heavier synth sound doing the same thing with a big muff pi.

That being said, the superego and EHX synth pedals look sweet too.

Re: What pedal would give me some "synth" sounds?

"Synth" suggests either resonant voltage controlled filtering effects or fake arpeggiation. The latter can be achieved with the BOSS SL-20 Slicer twin pedal. It has Tap Tempo and, I eventually discovered, can loop.

It should be noted that the BOSS SY-300 suggested earlier by Mincer does not require a dedicated hexaphonic pickup or special cables. It works with a regular quarter inch jack plug.

Re: What pedal would give me some "synth" sounds?

I have several synth effects. I love trying them and have kept a few so far. The Line 6 m13/ect gets used a lot by me, as does the Super Ego. The super ego is more of a organ/strings/ect simulating device though without more processing behind it or in it's loop. Any synth followed by an octave down pedal (like a Boss OC-2 or Digitech Whammy) will give much more sythn like options. Filters and fuzz can work great for synth noises as well.

I have an SL-20 Slicer I'm thinking about selling. Its fun to play around with by myself, but I can't find a place to use it with my band's music, so I think I'm gonna flip it and try to find another pedal to fill my last pedalboard spot!

Re: What pedal would give me some "synth" sounds?

I was wondering how many actually use it in their songs. I have no synth effects for guitar but I'm able to run my guitar through both analog synths of mine. Arturia MiniBrute and my Blue Lantern Modular. Guitar comes in as an oscillator, then I can run it through the 12db filter on the minibrute or on the modular can choose between a moog ladder filter, polyvoks filter, or 24db lowpass. I never do since my analog synths have better oscillators and I play keys. Might try it though. The Polyvoks filter is a gritty wicked little beasty. My analogs can scream pretty mean with the right filter tweaks on resonance and cutoff. The modular uses the 1/8" patch cables to patch modules together. I bet the Moogerfooger pedal would do nicely too for a pedal type synth thing. A good resonant filter is awesome, but add ADSR envelopes to the signal chain and you can pull a ton of different sounds.

I think I'll try mine again but with my new SS-20 preamp and cab sim out jack. I can patch an LFO to the filter to oscillate the filter slowly while playing like an auto wah effect or flange effect, but should be fun through polyvoks and then squish up the sound or turn into a pad with ADSR's

If I ever get them uploaded to photobucket...

Forum software won't let idevices upload pics directly. Just link to them if on the web already. Don't use pc at home except for work (netbook) so all pics on my iphone and transfer to ipad via cloud. I take pics with iphone because both minibrute and blue lantern modular are fully analog and don't store any presets. Presets are saved by taking pictures of my settings and patch cable placement. I have an album titled "Presets"

Other PC (laptop) is DAW only and only hook to internet for software updates on music programs. 100% ipad surfer.

Re: What pedal would give me some "synth" sounds?

The new photobucket app works great, my latest pedalbord pics have been all iphone. ;)

Back on topic, I've been doing a lot of "non guitar" parts in my band, mostly through the method I outlined above with compressor/volume pedal/chorus/delay, sometimes fuzz or filter. I think the Superego and B9/C9 would be an awesome addition for this type of playing... Might have to place an order! ;)

This was a one off larger sized Salamander synth. One of his earlier ones. New ones look more traditional modular. Got off ebay for low price direct from him.

Sorry to derail for a minute - back on topic!

Zoom MS-50G has some good synth models. I also recommend the Earthquaker Devices Bit Commander and, of course, the trusty MXR Blue Box. Subdecay Octasynth also looks intriguing.
