What Phase Shifter do you recommened?

Re: What Phase Shifter do you recommened?

Try out an MXR Phase 90, Electro Harmonix Small Stone or Nano Stone and if you can find it, a Boss PH-1r. Those are three distinct flavors of phasing, if you like one better than another but still fins some shortcomings, describe tham and there is surely a boutique phaser that fixes them (for 2.5 x's the price ;))

Also, try them in your FX loop and in front of the amp. I like mine in front, but many prefer them in the loop.

Right now, my favorites are:
MXR Phase 45 (2 stage, the 90 is 4 stage)
EHX Small Stone
Red Witch Moon Phaser

a Boss PH-1r.

Shush shush shush SHUSH! Don't tell him that! I want one, and they're getting scarce and expensive. Tell him to buy one of the brazillion PH-2's that are clogging up eBay.

Yeah, me too. The 6 phase shifters I have already aren't enough. ;) I need a PH-1r, Shannon, Maxon Rotary Phaser, HBE Psylocibe and Subdecay Quasar.

Re: What Phase Shifter do you recommened?

I have a hella nice, vintage Maestro single knob Mini Phase in the trading post for sale...I know it's shamless spam but it is a nice phaser and sounds killer!

Re: What Phase Shifter do you recommened?

Past that I say stay away from the reissue MXR stuff and Boss stuff as well...

It's funny that som many guys are trying to find and afford older PH-1r Phasers...I have one and was never crazy about it, it's on semi-permenment loan to my dad where it gets used with his Moog's most of them time but IMO it's just not a very good phaser...

Re: What Phase Shifter do you recommened?

I use an early version EH Small Stone and love it...It's actually pretty close in sound to a Univibe, though mine was tweaked by Howard Davis...This guy worked for and invented some of the early EH stuff....

Re: What Phase Shifter do you recommened?

i very much prefer my ph-1r over a stock reissue mxr phase 90 i tried. the simple parameters of depth and resonance on the ph-1r gave more control over the phase 90 any time. btw, not many people know that boss phasers has an internal trim pot to control the intensity of the phasing, if that made sense...

there are lot of mods on the net converting a stock phase 90 to a script 90 but no experience with that though.

of course, we are not comparing boss and mxr with the booteek stuff.

Re: What Phase Shifter do you recommened?

I have the original trio of 1970's MXR phasers, early (1977) block logo Phase 90 and Phase 100, and a script logo Phase 45 (1974). They are all quite different, but my favorite is the Phase 100 for its versatility. It gets very close to the sound of the 90 and 45, but also has a few other sounds that the others can't achieve. There is no comparison between the Dunlop reissues and the real deal. The original MXR's are beautiful, organic and rich and the reissues are weedy, thin and lame. It's worth the extra $$$ to find an original MXR, and my suggestion would be the Phase 100.

Cheers.....................wahwah

Re: What Phase Shifter do you recommened?

I miss my Phase 90. Long story but it's inoperable for now. Tasteful sounds no doubt. I agree with wahwah on his note, but a reissue will do in a pinch. You can always take out the R28 resistor for a smoother sound (especially from unity to around 9 0'clock) but then you lose a little of it's previous avaliable sounds. It's a give or take situation.

A EH Small Stone is nice. I've been wanting to try a Tone Factor Nebula Phasor, they're suppose to be really nice, but are geared to be more Phase-45-like.

Re: What Phase Shifter do you recommened?

Those are the standards I was going to mention also: MXR, EHx, and Boss. My favorites are the MXR Phase 100 and the Boss PH-3 (the most recent one). I have a DigiTech and an Ibanez PM7, which are awesome for more wild tones, but they don't sound very natural (especially the Ibanez, but that's why I love it).

Re: What Phase Shifter do you recommened?

100+ on the Nano Stone. Just got it on my board, sounds great!
I used to play with the MXR and it ways alright, it seemed a more like a wah going back and forth, but the Nano has another dimension to it. That said, some people like the MXR and dislike the Nano. Personally i liked the nano myself. Quite diff to the MXR.

Re: What Phase Shifter do you recommened?

I really like the Boss PS-3 . . . it takes a lot of playing with the pedal to find a setting that's exactly where you want it, but it's got a ton of great phaser sounds.

Re: What Phase Shifter do you recommened?

MXR EVH Phase 90. Sounds great. I like the sound of the Small Stone, but will never buy another EH pedal. Had 2 Small Stone's, and the quality is crap. 2 switches and one pot went bad in just a few months.

Re: What Phase Shifter do you recommened?

My favorites are the MXR Phase 100 and the Boss PH-3 (the most recent one).

The features of the PH-3 are very cool, but I find it steals some of my tone. I'm thinking of placing it through a true bypass looper though..

Re: What Phase Shifter do you recommened?

Boss PH-2. Two modes, responsive controls, and can be had for about $65 at most pawn shops or used guitar stores I've been to.
