Ernie Ball strings. .09 on Fender scale and .10 on Gibson scale.
I use a variety of picks.
But lately I've been liking the Dragon's Heart.

Re: What picks/stings are everybody using?

Dunlop Tortex .50mm (Red) picks for years, but I have to admit that I'm still looking for the "perfect" strings. Anyone know of any that cost like $3.00 a set, last for 12-18 months, never break and never go out of tune? :cool2:

Well, things've changed...

Still Dunlop Tortex, but I've switched to the yellow .73mm instead. I've also landed on d'Addario XL .009/.042s on all my electric guitars and am very pleased with the tone, feel, and longevity.

I care, Crusty… I care a lot about the choices for plectrum and strings that make YOU the happiest!

What makes me happy is trying to make music, trying to play appropriately for the song and for the listener.

I don't care what shoes people wear, what brand of piston rings are in their car or what shampoo they use. I don't even care much about peoples' limited vocabularies ... but I do care about what they are saying.

Yeah, this is a gear forum. I don't belong here.

Honestly, most people won't hear the difference, especially in a mix or on stage.

However, feel and perceived tonal differences to the player could be inspirational and help mentally make better music. :)

Re: What picks/stings are everybody using?

Some are gearheads. Some aren't. As was stated above, a gear forum is an odd choice of hangout for those who are not.

Re: What picks/stings are everybody using?

Strings: My ideal is the Fender xl150 set (.009-.040, pure nickel), but unless I am doing something serious, I've been prone to put on on Elixir Super Light Nanowebs (.009-.042), even though the thicker top strings never quite feel right to me. There is a balance to the xl150 set that is lost, but they can be hard to find and aren't particularly durable, so for the most part I choose a simpler solution.

Picks: For a long time I used heavy Fender 351s. Recently I've been experimenting with Dunlop Tortexes again. The infuriating thing is that the picks I like the most, which is some no-name pick by Schaller, is not really sold: you either get them through buying stuff from them, or you have to buy a huge quantity of all their thicknesses. Unfortunately they wear out quicker than most picks, so I can't buy a new FR every time I need a new one!

EDIT: Are 150XLs being discontinued? I see they are still available on the Fender page, but very few people seem to carry them any more!

For me when it comes to strings and picks I go purple all the way. For strings I use the Ernie Ball 11's Power Slinky (the purple pack) and for Plectrums I use the Dunlop 1.14mm Jazz III Tortex range which also are a purple color as you can see below. Tortex is the material of guitar pick I most prefer. In fact, I've been using them since day 1 and I find it exceptionally hard to change. The Ultex and Nylon materials come the closest to Tortex in terms of personal preference. I'm making a concerted effort to try as many different picks as possible.

Re: What picks/stings are everybody using?

Using Dunlop jazz III XLs (red, primetones and ultexs
Moving away from elixir nanowebs back to NYXLs

Re: What picks/stings are everybody using?

Lol this thread is a zombie killed and rezzed again and again.

I'll play, though:

Strings: Elixer Optiweb. BEST strings I have ever used. No fraying like nanowebs did, last forever, sound great.

Picks: Jazz iii, either Eric Johnson or Max Grip red. Got a bag of each, just wish they made the max grip with the same tip and thinness of the EJ. Such a subtle difference. Max grip when I'm practicing, ej when I record, just for that 2% boost.
