What picks/stings are everybody using?

Re: What picks/stings are everybody using?

I stepped away from Jazz picks for the moment; I was spoiled by them and got scared when I realized how much worse my playing was without them. So I'm switching it up between (mostly) "standard" Fender/Dunlop heavies and on occasion Jazz i or Jazz iii.

I use Ernie Ball Slinkies & Cobalt Slinkies (reinforced plains for Jaguars/Jazzmasters.)

Re: What picks/stings are everybody using?

Dunlop delrin 1.14 mm and fender regular 250L 9-42

Re: What picks/stings are everybody using?

Lately I have two kinds of picks on top of my amplifier. V-picks Traditional Lite (Sapphire Blue), and Dunlop Tortex TIII 1.0. I have been using the V-picks most of the time.

For strings I use Musician's Gear Electric 10 Nickel Plated (.010-.046) on all my guitars.

Re: What picks/stings are everybody using?

I have long searched for the strings and picks I like best.

For strings I now use Ernie ball 10-46, I have tried various brands and gauges but these I like the best.

For picks I use Ernie ball prodigy picks. These are new, I tried diffrent brands and shapes but I think they are AMAZING! they are precisely what I wanted.

Re: What picks/stings are everybody using?

Dunlop Tortex Jazz III 1.14mm (the little purple ones). I love the tone of Tortex, nice and attacky, but I also like the feel of Jazz III picks. These are a happy medium.

Ernie Ball Not Even Slinky 12-56 strings. I tune to Drop C, and I like the tension of these. They feel perfect in my 25.5" Ibanez, and they hold up decently in my 25" PRS SE.

Re: What picks/stings are everybody using?

I recently switched to the Tortex pointies and despite it being a tiny change in shape, it threw me off completely. Always blue (1mm).

Strings, I've always used slinkies. I have regulars on my Les Paul right now but I've got the skinny top heavy bottom to try next.

Re: What picks/stings are everybody using?

Tuned to Eb / Drop-C# on electrics I like DR 10-46s; Tite Fits on the heavy rotation guitars and Black Beauties on the others. 11-50 Dragon Skins on acoustic with 10s on the 12-string. For bass I like DR coated 45-105... Anyone see a pattern??

For picks I like Dunlop Tortex either .73 or 1.14 depending on the sound I'm after; .73 Ultex for bass.

Pretty much the same except that I'm tuning to standard / Drop-D now, and using .60mm Tortex for some acoustic stuff. I also realized that I forgot LaBella 760FL/S (43-103) flatwounds on the Squier Bronco. When playing electric, I use a 1.14mm Tortex most of the time.

Using Dunlop jazz III XLs (red, primetones and ultexs
Moving away from elixir nanowebs back to NYXLs

The NYXL gauges I use vary depending on scale length and what I want to use for but generally
E 9-46 (sometimes use 10-46)
Drop D 9-52 (sometimes use 10-52)
D 10-52 (sometimes use 11-52, main tuning I use.)
Drop C 10-56 (sometimes use 11-56, main tuning for writing more chordal stuff)
C 11-56 (rarely play in C, sometimes use 12-56)
Drop B 11-60 (again don’t use this tuning very often, Sometimes use a 12-60 if I make the guitar a bit more accepting of heavy playing)
B 12-64 (sometimes use a 13-64 with a wound 4th, one of my favourite tunings)
Drop A 12-68 (sometimes use a 13-68 with a wound 4th, one of my favourite tunings)

I care, Crusty… I care a lot about the choices for plectrum and strings that make YOU the happiest!

What do you say, everyone? Can I get an AMEN?!

I’m pretty much the same… I STILL care about Crusty’s happiness!

Re: What picks/stings are everybody using?

I had to step down from 10s to 9s after my catastrophic injury to my left wrist a year ago. But I'm able to use 10s little by by little again. On some guitars I use pure nickel wrap. On others I use nickel plated wrap. D'Darios or Ernie Ball, it doesn't matter to me about brands.

I often don't use a pick depending on if I can find one, and the guitar, as well as the current wear pattern on my finger nails. When I do it's usually a small white tear dropped shaped one about the size of my thumb tip. Stiff. I don't know the brand.

6 or 7 years ago I had to stop playing entirely due to RSI issues related to work (I'm a computer programmer). After a couple months of PT I was able to slowly start playing again, but I had to step down from 11s to 10s to keep the tendonitis from coming back.

Re: What picks/stings are everybody using?

Purple or blue Tortex. I bought 150 of each back in 2004, and I still haven't come anywhere close to working through them yet. I might've only used a few dozen of them in the past 14 years. Pretty sure that was my lifetime supply of picks that I bought.

As for strings, I like Ernie Balls. I will use D'Addarios too, and sometimes I intentionally put them on guitars that need a little extra brightness (like my LP Standard and Custom). That said, I am leaning toward Fender Bullets and Super Bullets more and more these days. The bullet ends are a great feature.

I had no idea what you were talking about here, so I looked them up. Pretty cool idea, even though it’s not exactly new. The article I read said that Fender came out with them in 1974... so I can’t believe I’d never noticed that there was something different about the design.

Have you found that they actually do improve sustain and tuning stability?

I think some playing styles probably benefit from bullet ends. Knowing how to setup a Strat properly for your playing style makes way more difference, though.

I was thinking more in general compared to ball-end strings (for any guitar).
